Jerome Bettis was a great running back for the Steelers. He was big and powerful and gained a lot of his yards on running plays up the middle. He was known as The Bus for his powerful and bruising style. He had a great career even without a star quarterback to take the pressure off of him. Bettis retired after the 2005 season in which the Steelers won the Super Bowl.

Thank you for the wiki history lesson, elementary edition! For your next entry may I suggest Rod Woodson or Rich Erenberg.

Let me take some sting off this OP, Bettis was one of my all time faves!

I am guessing tylerlikesthesteelers is a young man, cutting his teeth, researching and writing about the Steelers.

    Well done!

Bettis something special and his style and Cowher's coaching were a perfect combination. If the Steelers had a lead with 5 or 6 minutes left everyone knew Bettis was getting the ball. It didn't matter he would grind out first downs and the other team would never see the ball again.
A dominant running back when the team needed to eat the clock.
Look up some of Bettis's highlights it's well worth watching.

I can`t believe it`s been 16 years since he retired.

Time is just flying by faster each year.

Bettis was fun to watch and loved the game .

I thought he was called the Bus because it was his favorite mode of transportation. Learn something new every day!

    J/k tylerlikesthesteelers.

I keep on forgetting what I feel is his (and the steelers) most impressive stat, the winning % when he ran for 100 plus yards and they held the lead by 10 pts going inot the 4th qtr. In today's nfl that type of lead never seems safe, wiht the Bus he just continued to dash hopes of a comeback

I remember how the year Maddox and Ward\Burress went off for some huge numbers that they tried to reinvent the Steelers offense in the following year but didnt realize that the reason they had such success was teams stacking the box against Bettis. Without that threat the passing game sputtered and they tried to get Bettis going in the 2nd half but Bettis was effective when he wore teams down from the opening kickoff, trying to establish a heavy run game in the late stages never worked

I will never forget watching NFL Films. Seeing Jerome Bettis tell Willie Parker exactly what to do on his epic Super Bowl XL run. Bettis knew every cut. Bettis knew where every block was going to be. Bettis knew where every defender was going to be. Bettis was not only a student of the game, but a teacher of the game. It takes a class act to know, that that play was going to be an epic Super Bowl play, and at the same time know, that Willie Parker was the right choice to carry the ball on the play.

Bettis was a true Steeler. He is my all time favorite player and I’m glad the nfl “rigged the Super Bowl” so he could go out a champion.

    Bettis
    Miller
    Troy
    Kiesel
    Ward

shut up and play type of guys

Good to be young but you would have loved the guys who played on the 70's teams. To be honest I wish I was only old enough to read about them:)

I was 11 years old when Mean Joe's coke ad came out. My dad was a Steelers fan, and I grew up watching men hollering at little boxes with bent rabbit ear antennas that sometimes had tin foil stretched across them. But it was that ad that locked me in for life.

That being said, I guess us old timers know who the original "Bus" was. :lolol:

Many years ago I was digging a sewer line for my weekend cabin. My elderly father was watching and kept calling me “Norton”.

Great memory! Reminded of this, I had 3 older sisters, the youngest being 8 years older then me. We had one rinky dinky TV and there was no such thing as a remote controller. They always made me switch the channels and when that dumb ass show Bonanza (could have been a great show but it was a childhood nightmare for me) came on they would make me stand by the TV holding the tin foil antenna the whole show so they could ooh and ahh over Little Jo for an hour.

Form of child abuse but I'll take it considering how they spoiled the hell out of me. The next day they always took me to a place called Isleys (I think) for one big ass ice cream cone:)

Great memory! And right after Bonanza was Gunsmoke. Might have been the other way around...memory is a little foggy on that one.

But there were some pretty attractive women running around the Ponderosa Ranch. While your sisters were ogling Michael Landon, there should have been some eye candy for you as well.

For a big powerful man, Bettis was light on his on his toes and had an ability to get "skinny" in the seam. It was a great combo.
