If there's anymore evidence to suggest drafting a QB in the first is a bad idea so be it, but that kinda sums it up. No QB selected in the 1st round from 09-14 is on the team that drafted them due to being a bust or being traded. Teams really don't have the patience to develop QBs and are wasting draft capital on QBs. Look at how many wasted Browns and Jets QBs there been. I don't think Wentz in Philly should suddenly be given up on either. I think QBs that develop the fastest generally has pieces surrounding them, IE a quality OL and RB/WRs. Teams' management and fans alike put too much value on QBs when drafting them and are prone to quickly give up on them after two seasons. Hopefully the Steelers don't waste the next ten/fifteen years drafting a QB in the first every three seasons, seeking Ben's replacement. That creates weaknesses across the board, thus making it even harder to develop a QB.

free agency and price have made it hard to keep one. We should try to keep mason and add to him. I mean draft another one.

Don't want any of these QBs. Would cost too much to move up for the top 3, and Lance has very limited experience. Jones and Trask are meh prospects at 1.24.

He was talking about years '09-'14, not draft selections 9-14.

what would you say to moving down some in the first and grabbing some extra picks and then grab one of those guys? i really could see this happen. 28-29-30 should gain us a couple of picks and possible one in the 5th that we don't have or another in the 4th or 3rd. that may be the sweet spot for getting some pretty good players still and a guy we may be after. my thinking is that i don't see a must have guy at 24 anyway, but are many past that point. even at the bottom of the 1st we get that 5th year option and they cost less.

I know they do, but up until now on the podcast they haven't been high on any outside of the top 3 and have been consistently predicting and endorsing the Steelers draft OL in the first.

From the article (that you obviously haven't read):

The hype around Jones seems to double daily. He went from a 6rd-UDFA before the season, to a top 10 pick.

I wouldn't be surprised if he went before Lance when you consider everything. Lance could be the 5th QB taken.

well yeah, sure, but I can't imagine he makes it past Minn, NE, Chicago, Washington, or even the Raiders.

Maybe if he made it to NE and Billy boy decided to sell the pick. He has to be pissed, this is the first draft in 20 years that he doesn't have 2 first rd picks. That would probably create quite a bidding war I think.

I don't care, I don't see Jones being that special, he was surrounded by so much talent at Bama.

    Agreed.

Mac Jones gives me pause for many of reasons. His biggest concern as to where I stand ranking him stems from his throwing limitations overall. To put it bluntly, he is meant for the West Coast Offense only. Not the Erhardt-Perkins Offense, RPO Offense and oh most definitely not the Air Raid Offense.

That said, his intangibles are off the charts; same level as Trevor Lawrence. That said, intangibles will only do so much.

trask if early. mond if middle. i'm not ruling out book if late. something about that kid i feel has the making of a decent player down the road. his height is the major problem but they kept duck for two years. there are a couple of others i wouldn't be mad if we took but we seem to like bigger qb's. hopefully sullivan can make a difference. we have holes but this is one as well.

This makes more sense than moving up and unless someone falls that is just to good to pass on then trading down would really be a good move. The draft itself is a science based on chance, sure they do the scouting and homework but still you never know who is going to develop into a good pro. If you trade up you always have to look back and see who you could have had, if you trade down the same comparisons as a player gets picked and becomes an all pro..those things will always be there. Certain years it just makes sense to consider trading down, with all the holes and depth in certain positions in the draft this is a good year to consider it.

If we draft a QB I think it'll be Kellen Mond or Jamie Newman in the 4th or 5th round to provide QB depth behind (Ben) Mason and Haskins.

Yeah so have the last 6 QBs from Alabama, but not alot of people were pimping them , or myself.
    I even said I wouldn't take T.T. last year in the 1st.
Dolphins did though. M. Jones is good. Sorry he won't run a 4.40. He will find the open man ,and deliver the ball .

CBS mock has the Steelers moving up to take Jones. I wouldn’t do that and I’m not sure they’d have to anyway but I’d take him if he was there when they pick.

I will be very surprised if the Steelers select a QB in the first 4 rounds.

Oh well, he can find the open man on another team, I wouldn't draft him #24.

Maybe if Trey Lance fell to #24 then I would be interested.
