Kaboly covers several options on how to work Bens contract for him to come back. I don’t like any of them. The best option he gives is adding voidable years but you’re still hurting yourself next year. After reading these, I’m even more convinced they need to rip the bandaid off and I don’t like saying that because I don’t have much confidence in what’s behind him.

Voidable years is the only way he comes back in all likelihood. It’ll probably leave $12m dead cap on the sheet in 2022, then another $4m then for Pouncey, who no doubt will also come back. It’s manageable, I’m just not sure there is any point. The idea that they can win it all next with a gutted roster, or that Bens body will hold up to another gruelling season is very optimistic.

We will know in the coming weeks how much the Steelers want him back. My suspicion is that they are not nearly as in on this final retirement tour as Ben is.

I’m not as down on the team as some, if I thought Ben could give us a full season and that his decline in play was due to injury, I’d be much more open to having him back. Those are big risks though.

I’d rather use the money to hold onto some of the players they are going to lose by bringing him back.

Ben's got arthritis in both knees. Even if he's injury free next year, that will get worse as the season progresses.

Is that your opinion or is that the word going around? Because if that’s what that report was about during the season where people inside the Steelers organization were very concerned about Bens knees, then they’d be complete morons to bring him back.

The Steelers will have over 70 million in cap space in 2022, Ben's dead cap space won't cripple the team.

I think it was from Steelers depot, look at all those high priced guys who contracts ends in 2021.
    Pouncey
    DeCastro
    Ben
    Haden
    Nelson
    Vince

They actually only have $55m in commitments in 2022 as things stand per Overthecap so they probably have closer to $145m in space if the cap goes back to $200m. They only have 19 players under contract however, so that room will disappear very quickly after they give TJ, Minkah and others extensions this off season and next, fill out the roster to 54, possibly up to $20m in dead cap if Ben comes back etc.

They certainly should have plenty of flexibility after the 2021 season however

Well, no one really knows how much room they're under in '22 since we don't know the league cap that season - likely back close to '20, but COVID still muddies the waters of potential NFL revenue next season.

That said, the Steelers have about $56M currently tied to the 2022 cap year. Using a conservative ballpark estimate of $200M for that season's cap yields $144M in space. Sounds roomy, but the $56M only accounts for 17 players on the roster. Allocate ~$1M each to fill out the rest, $108M under.

But then you have to factor chunk $ moving there from contract extending/restructing veteran needed to get under in 2021 (some could be cut ahead of 2021):

    Ben
    Pouncey
    Heyward
    Haden
    Nelson

And the core talent whose contracts expire after 2020/21:

    Sutton
    Hilton

Watt (carries a $10M hit in '21, could look to extend this offseason)
    Fitzpatrick
    Washington
    Rudolph
    Etc.

The FO is going to have to be very nimble with their cap management the next two offseasons.

The only one, outside of stats ,that's done better than Ben, is Brady. So.....? I have honestly played in bands with guys the same way. Some needed 2 go over something. Over ,and over every time, so they felt comfortable playing it live. Others didn't because it made them overthinking things, made them robotic, and mistake prone. So it's really just how different people function.

In the Entire history of the game, only Brady and Roethlisberger have thrown for over 500 yards in a postseason game and only Ben for like what, four times?!?!?

    Draft that....

Ol' washed up Ben had a better season than Lamar, Baker & Burrow. Yeah he didn't finish well but none of the others did either, just sayin.

Did it without a oline or needing to run a professional offense. :lolol:

    On two bad knees. :roflmao:

I just don't think Ben deserves another free ride next year.

Make Ben come to practice everyday.
Make Ben play in the Preseason games.
Make Ben compete for the starting job.

What coach on the team will have the guts to sit Ben down if his play goes down hill again like last year.

Mason needs to be warming up on the sideline more and given a chance to compete for the starting job.

By what metric? I’ll leave the rookie Burrow out of this. But both Lamar and Baker had better Passer Ratings and QBR than Ben this yr. Both ran better, LaMar ran ALOT better. Wins? All three teams had 12 Wins counting playoffs, only one of the 3 didn’t win a playoff game. Was the team that didn’t have an online the Cle Browns? Baker met one of starting linemen 8n pregame warmups. And some how managed a double digit win on the road against the superior Ben and the greatest SteelerD..

So. Let's get this straight. We want 2 win at stats, games , or SBs? Since one team beat the other twice, the other beat the other twice, and so on. None went 2 the SB. 2 had a bunch of highly paid free agents that they won't be able 2 keep. So honestly I'd say we were pretty even. Mark my words.....once L. Jackson, & B. Mayfield get paid, and won't be able 2 sign high priced free agents. It won't be the same. Of course I said this about Dalton, & Flacco and everyone said I was crazy. NFL trend shows, most teams ( not Brady) ( he went 2 a fully stocked team like P. Manning did) win ( or go 2 the SB) with Qb on , or just off their rookie deal. Cause they can spend money elsewhere.
So IMO . L. Jackson, B. Mayfield, J. Allen only have so long. Of course unless they give the hometown discounts. Like Brady.

What about passing under pressure without even attempting to run? Ben's biggest obstacle is Ben. Cleveland's oline lost them games early & the Steeler's line just regressed. Ben is still the best qb in the AFCN, facts. Take the offense out of his hands & get him some help & the Steeler's old warrior goes out besting our rivals.

I already knew this, but with it being confirmed why would you bring him back ? The money is crazy and you have a new OC why tie his hands with Ben ?Ben is to old to just be the show up on game day and ball out guy ..

I agree it is how different QB'S function , but Ben has lost the ability to do the things that made him different..Now Ben needs to be a student of the game more than ever so if he is not willing or able then he should be cut without a doubt...His lack of film study and not being prepared is exactly why the Team starts so slow ....
