I know less probably than you do, but reading your post, if they extend Ben 2 years, I don't think its as simple as spreading out what has already been paid or owed over two additional years. There will probably be additional salary tied to those 2 extra years and that is where, to me, this could end up being either a good plan or just smoke and mirrors and the nightmare just gets delayed. In other words, what is Ben's salary for the two extended contract years and how is that going to work?

Thanks for the heads up. His name sums it up fairly well.

I don’t know how many games Watson was down 28-0.

I also know that Watson can throw the ball deep, has tons of mobility, can line up under center, lost probably the best WR in football and still put up big numbers, 4,800 yards (1,000 more yards than Ben) same number of TD’s 33, less interceptions, 7.

Look, I already said opinions vary but I couldn’t disagree more strongly about Watson. 2nd best QB in the league, IMO.

I think everyone knew that, but that doesn't mean he's taking a pay cut. They can convert all money due to him to a bonus and spread the cap hit over an extension.

Base salary only with an extension. Ben is due $22M in prorated bonus that can't be reduced. His $19M in base can be leveraged as bonus over an extension, but he still has to be paid the vet minimum (~$1.1M) in base each year.

This has all been covered in the Do you want Ben back thread, I’ll move it over there.

Whether we fans like it or not Steeler Management let’s people finish out their contracts.
It’s also been said that they feel Ben deserves to finish out if he so chooses.

Thats because they were loyal to you but I don't think it applies to everyone. Ask Polly how loyal he thinks the Steelers are or were

Others probably touched on it. But it occurred to me that the op asks if we want Ben back. What we want and what we're gonna get are two entirely different things. Well, I mean it could be worse. Broken down Ben is still better than at least a handful of NFL QB's . It's just that this organization is doing the equivalent of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

As far as getting Watson. The Goff for Stafford trade blew that out of the water. The Texans are going to ask for the world and get it if they decide to move him.

Yeah, I see the restructure extending his contract in order to lessen the salary cap hit in coming years. That way if he is forced into retirement after this season, he won't be that much of a liability in 2022 and 2023.

I agree with you on the loyalty part. Yes, Troy may not have been at the level he once was during his last season. However, I always felt he was a strong contributor and they needed to change his role slightly. They just couldn't let him freelance as he had done most of his career.

Yes, and he will follow the Lambert rule of putting the QB in a dress so he does not get slapped around in the pocket.

I am still going to put this one out there. I know no one believes Ben's successor is on the current roster. Even with Haskins recently acquired it can be questionable. I still believe Mason Rudolph can be a starter in this league in the right system. Pittsburgh moved up a few spots to get him as he was on the Patriots board next. I think Mason is a cerebral QB and they have stated they are impressed with his game preparation and the time he puts into the film room. I am in no way comparing him to Tom Brady, but neither are mobile having any high level of athleticism. I just wonder if time would put him in the same cerebral level of a Brady. While Brady may not have been the ultimate QB with the game on the line early in his career (many attributed Adam Vinetari is who won their first two Super Bowls as well as their defense), you have to wonder given the time and proper scenario is he going to be the one who got away.

I think he’s knocking in the door of Top 5, but I can’t say that I’ve seen nearly enough to rank him #2. He’s been on a sinking ship of an organization that has made dumb move after dumb move for a few years running, so it’s hard to fully evaluate the guy other than to trust your eyes when you watch him. My eyes say he’s borderline top 5, but not necessarily second best after Mahomes.

Curious as to who you’d rank above him. When I go through the names, I can really only make a case for Wilson being better.

Mahomes, Wilson, Rodgers and Watson are in a tier by themselves for me, with Mahomes being the best overall, you could argue who is 2/3/4

I think there is a bit of a gap to the next guys, Allen, Brady (current version), Matt Ryan, Ben, Stafford, Lamar etc. Allen was awesome this season but I’m not entirely sure he can do that every year.

Wilson, A. Rodgers, P. Maholmes, Burrows( talk about not having much all around team), maybe Josh Allen & I know people will laugh at this, but Ben. Still not convinced just coming off surgery didn't have something 2 do with alot of it. If that makes any sense.

Fair but have to see much more from Burrows before he can be on that list.

Young Rodgers definitely better, don’t think I’d say that now.

And hell to the no on Ben, lol, sorry, just having fun with ya but no. This team is in a lot of trouble next season if they get Ben from the last 6 weeks but I wouldn’t put Ben from the first 11 week ahead of Watson either.

I’m fine with anyone that says Watson is top 5 but that’s still worth trading for, well, before the insane price the Rams just paid anyway.

Now: Mahomes, Rodgers, Wilson, Brady, Allen. I may put him over Allen, but Allen's upside is huge, and he just produced a 50 TD combined passing/rushing season.
2021-2022: Mahomes, Rodgers, Wilson, Allen, maybe Burrow.

So that's what I mean by knocking on the door of Top 5.

yep, extend him for 10 more years. He threw for 33 TDs in 2020 and won a SB in 2008. Saw zero decline in his play especially down the stretch of the season.

Obviously, we are most likely going to have Ben as our starting QB in 2021. Eagles are somewhat guarded about Carson Wentz fate. I think they will keep him for 2021 and if that happens, we would potentially have a shot at getting him in 2022. Early on he was compared to Ben and does seem to be a Steelers type of QB. Now keeping him healthy is another question.
