I am an old time Steeler nut and I remember some rough years in the mid 1980s to 1991. It seems we are in for another rough mini era. Some facts that we can’t change no matter what we want to do. A quarterback that’s washed up and a nightmare to salary cap whether he stay or retired. A o line that can’t block good enough to get a yard on 3 downs in a row.
Zero explosive running backs. Wide receivers that can’t catch consistently. A defense that is disgusted with offense ineptitude and now best player watt wants out. We are salary cap heck and can’t solve all issue in draft. Welcome to the bubby Brister era kids for next three years

I am not hopeful for 2021 because of all these free agents leaving, very tight cap and a very tough schedule. It’s going to be a difficult season I think.

Id be much more optimistic in the medium term. Their cap issues are gone by 2022, in fact they should have plenty of money to spend. If they sort out the QB position I think k they can bounce back quickly

The if is doing a lot of work there, IRL. Finding a quarterback is never easy.

To go from a 12 winning season to a 6-8 winning season, then back in the playoff hunt seems to be a yearly thing in the NFL. I think the last 4 Steelers seasons are a metric of there is little difference between mediocre and good, and many teams are in that area year in and year out. Going from good to great is a different story, I think the team can continue the good to mediocre swing for a long time (as many teams do), putting together that great run takes something that starts from the top...something that has been lost and unless the vision changes will likely remain the same.

This yr I suspect 7-9 to 9-7, on the fringe of playoff qualification is best case scenario. There will a lot of turnover and/or guys playing one year too long. Could be 5-11 or 6-10, if things go bad.

Hopefully a sub par year like 7-9, 6-10. All the better to get a closer position to draft a QB #1. With the purge of UFA and releases and retirements this team will be ousted from playoff contention. Ben will have his curtain call then hang em up.

The goggles that are being worn at the top will most likely prohibit improvement in vision that you say is lost, and I agree. This is a stagnant status quo organization that thrives in not changing. Coaches don't change, play calling doesn't change, anything that is in desperate need of changing, doesn't. IMO. KC seems to put together a fairly competitive team every year and his draft classes have been huge contributors of late. So, I believe we have the vehicle to get to where we want to go, but not the drivers. I thought we had a damn good team to start the 2020 season and felt with a good defense and all the weapons on offense, we could really do some damage out there. And we did, up to 11-0, but there were warning signs, again. Then the drivers of this team failed to adapt, change, adjust, and just do basic game planning that wasn't anticipated. I anticipate the 2021 team being a competitive one to start the year even with all the challenges that have been posted on this message board ad nauseum. I also anticipate the same things happening again in 2021 because the vision that needed to change is incapable of doing so. We had an opportunity to make some progress with a new OC, but instead, we put a coach more of a RF lite variety instead of one with fresh ideas. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen anything this team has done for such a long time that makes me think otherwise. I don't know what this team is capable, or incapable, of doing anymore.

Without knowing who will be a cap casualty and barring major injuries, I think the defense carries us to a 8/9 win season with the real pain coming in 22.

The doom and gloom is strong with this one, HeinzMustard would be proud.

I don’t think it’s as bad as all that.

It’s they key to everything, of course. I think next season is going to be difficult no matter what, but they can reboot the roster pretty quickly and be competitive in terms of the division and playoffs with a mid-level QB like Brissett or even Haskins if he gets it together.

Competing for championships is a whole other matter. There are probably only 4-5 truly elite QB’s around at any one time and the teams that have them have a much larger margin for error, especially in the playoffs.
