My dad had a big Lionel setup every Christmas. It was 8’ x 24’ in our basement. When I got older we built a permanent HO that was about 12’ x 16’.

my brother also has an N scale set-up. We had a Lionel set that was killed when we were young. My dad bought it used. We were too young and didn't realize what we had and he eventually sold it. I would kill for that set up right now. Two monster locos, bridges, tunnels, tons of track and switches, a double controller with sound, tons of cars, you name it. It would be worth thousands today at the prices it costs now.

Years ago, I was Captain on a new build that was being built by a local custom yacht builder. Going through the boat as it was being built, I saw some electrical items mounted in really stupid places. There was even a 110v water pump mounted in the bilge!
I asked one of the owners of the yard, who was a marine engineer, what qualifications someone had to have to be the lead on one of their builds. He told me they had to be a finish carpenter. When I asked why they didn't have to be an engineer, he told me it was because a carpenter could frame things in so they looked good!?!

My brother and I did the same thing to my dads Lionel. We recently donated all of it to a local model railroad club. There were a lot of hand built buildings, trestles, etc.

My dad and I made 3 trips by train:
    Seattle to San Diego
    Montreal to Vancouver
    Beijing to Moscow 5,300 miles
