    Bill Cowhers tree has

Dom Capers, Chan Gailey, Jim Haslett, Dick LeBeau, Marvin Lewis, Mike Mularkey, Ken Whisenhunt, Bruce Arians

8 coaches who went from position coach to head coach... many hired from his staff straight up a HC opportunity.

Mike Tomlin has Bruce Arians.... who he inherited from Cowher and who they forced out... and only got an HC opportunity because of Chuck Pagano going through cancer treatments.

Does it mean anything? Did Cowher hire better people? Are Tomilins people stumbling or just not getting opportunities? I don't even recall hearing one of Tomlins guys getting a phone call. Munchak might have.. but he was a head coach before arriving.... am I forgetting anyone?

Anyway.. what do you think that means if anything?

The cupboard is bare. Tomlin is a great motivator, bad game-planner or hiring coach.

It means that Tomlin is so good that he made it to 2 Super Bowls, and has never had a losing season, despite never even having good assistants.

There... that should get half the board worked up into a lather...

Tomlin may not want to keep competition in house.

His old Memphis buddies Randy and Keith Butler aren't getting HC jobs anywhere.

I haven't the foggiest who actually hires and fires assistants around here but we've had some bad ones in recent years. They're old, too. Tomlin is weak on game management and scheme and teams want intelligence/detail/innovation when elevating a young coordinator.

The big difference to me is Cowher wasn't afraid to fire coaches if they didn't produce. He would of fired Randy last year. He would of fired Porter way before Tomlin did even though he loved Porter as a player.

Also I think most people know Tomlin is not a great x and o guy but more of a motivator, speaker and cheerleader type of coach.

MT guys are like Christmas trees, you could replace them with fakes and get the same results.

I was going to say the same thing. Cowher was constantly on top of his staff. Cowher kept great people around him. If you didnt produce, you were gone. He fired Ron Erhardt in favor of Chan Gailey. He fired Kevin Gilbride after what seemed to be a good offensive season. Anyone remember Ray Sherman's OC run? Defense sucked...Tim Lewis...gone.

An assistant coaching job under Tomlin is a "till death do us part" position.

There really isn't any Steelers coordinators that have been head coaching material. Lebeau was too old. No one would want Butler. No one would want Fichtner. No one wanted Haley. Who else has there really been? Even BA only got his shot because Pagano got sick.

Right there is the problem. We don't have cheerleaders. Been saying for years young hot ladies in skimpy black and gold uniforms would help the team.:sneak:

Capers was a DB coach for the Saints prior to Steelers.

Gailey had numerous jobs in Denver.

Haslett was with the Saints and Raiders.

LeBeau was with the Eagles, Packers, and Bengals.

Wiz was with the Ravens, Browns, and Jets.

    Mularkey started coaching in Tampa.

Arians was with the Chiefs, Saints, Colts, and Browns.

Bill Belichick has a big coaching tree. But, none of them have amounted to much of anything.

    Eric Mangini- Poop
    Romeo Crennel-Poop
    Charlie Weis-Poop
Josh McDaniels-Poop- Returns to genius level once back with Bill and Brady, gets Cam Newton returns to Poop
Bill Obrien-Poop-even a bigger poop as a GM, so he's a double poop
    Matt Patricia-Poop

Even all those guys that Cowher put out not many did much of anything.

So who cares about Tomlin coaching tree, sometimes guys are better coordinators than head coaches.

If Tomlin has full control over assistants then he's probably hurt his own success and payday by holding onto the deadwood. With better staff who knows maybe he has another SB on his resume. It seems like management has to coddle Tomlin and tell him what to do. Where Bill Cowher would be like here's who I want to fire and they would say ok makes sense.

Not sure what you are looking for Hack with this thread. Just another MT shortcoming that the MT apologists will ignore or deny. They can't see reality because Tomlins balls are obscuring their vision.

    This.

The idea of coaching trees only works for certain guys whose assistants take or develop a similar approach in their later roles.

Otherwise you’re just counting people who at one point in their life worked at a certain organisation.

So, you're saying that Tomlin has hired and taught coaches who have gone on to achieve great success?
