There won't be enough cap room to sign Bud. JuJu has a better chance at a 2nd contract. Watt will get paid.

I can see him being back on a 1 year deal, Bud will probably want that because he knows he won’t get the contract he was hoping for coming off an injury that has him starting the season late. There is also the possibility that the Steelers can work out a multi year deal for the same reason. Maybe Bud won’t want to risk a worse injury and will take a fair offer to stay in a place he loves.

Lot will depend on what happens with the cap, I haven’t heard anything concrete yet on where it will be set at.

Or maybe Highsmith blows away expectations and all this is moot but I doubt that. I expect him to do well but I think it will take a couple seasons to reach his full potential in which case, the first scenario of Bud coming back on a one year deal would be the best option.

Bud could possibly come back on a 1 year prove it deal, but with the cash strapped Steelers not sure this can happen. Plus you might not get him back till mid season-on.

"If" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

This is a good opportunity for Highsmith. Pass protection has been a huge weakness for Washington, which is sure to focus on Watt, Heyward, and Tuitt. The opportunities will be there.

I should qualify my statement. Taking the 5th year option is not something I usually think is something players look down on, a lot of times that is the year a long term deal is worked out. Understand that there are many FA's pending in 2021 and a deflated CAP will certainly be a challenge. I do think they will get an extension worked out with Ben (read somewhere that a deal could actually lower that hit to around 8 mill...IDK just something I read). So i do not think all is doom and gloom..But have to believe TJ's number is only going to go up.

There are a huge variety of outcomes for Bud here. For one thing- he's going to have to pass a physical before anyone signs him, right? And that will depend on how his rehab is coming along.

The only thing I feel confident in predicting is that he won't be signed early in FA, but who knows what will be happening then?

I would love for Bud Dupree to be back next year, but I do believe as late as his ACL injury was, he may have a hard time getting the big contract from anyone else. Either he stays with the Steelers under a sizeable one year contract, or he may be a free agent a few weeks into the season until he can prove he is rehabbed. His big contract year will now be 2022.
