Spillane played really well in the 2019 Pre-season, I liked his motor. I think he will be good against the run, and the stuff in front.

I just don't know how he will match up against TE's.

Think it will take a good group effort, between Spillane, Gilbert, and Marcus Allen as a hybrid.

I would imagine a signing will take place for some depth.

Boy didn't know Spillane's Grandfather Was Johnny Lattner, he won the Heisman Trophy in 1953 when at Notre Dame.

Lattner actually played one professional season with the Steelers in 1954.

In interviews when guys on the team talk about UG3 they always say things that make me wonder if he doesn't have the defensive playbook down?

That may be why Spillane got the hat?

Hopefully we get to see Gilbert play now, have Spillane play the running downs, then bring in Gilbert on passing downs.

Spillane really laid the wood to Austin Hooper yesterday, he demolished him on that check down screen.

They're all rushing downs with the Ravens.

Bush's impact will be felt and hard to replicate. may be some bigger plays through the defence than per usual, because his natural abilities and athleticism. which simply means the offence will need to make up for a few more big plays.

That is part of it. I also wonder how well he can move laterally, which is probably the biggest thing the Steelers lose with Bush out.

Considering Spillane had the green dot helmet and called the defense the rest of the game speaks volumes!!!! UGlll and even M. Allen are more athletic in speed and quickness but if you don’t know what to do and when to do it then speed means nothing. Spillane is also a solid tackler.

Is it simply a case of Spillane, UG3 or Allen getting Bush’s snaps or can they move other guys around on passing plays? Get Terrell in to ILB, Hilton or Davis at SS, get Sutton on the field more?

Linebacker by committee as far as I know. How the snaps will be distributed will likely depend on aspects such as the opponent, the opposing Offensive Formations and opposing Personnel, to name a few. There are other factors as well but I would imagine those being the top three.

I would guess they play more sub-packages , dime, nickel etc, and even less base defense.

I am fascinated to see how they handle it. Personally I think the run D will hold, there may be slippage but it won’t kill them. The issue will be coverage. Vince and Spillane on the field together is an invitation to throw the ball.

My buddy texted me earlier just to let me know the Steelers were looking at a Ball State alumni (because he's also a Ball State alumni)
So... Ray Wilborn played his college ball at Ball State, but that's all I know about him.;+)

Who calls the defense now? Vince? Spillane looked like he should take his spot. We will miss that sideline to sideline speed tremendously.

Agreed, it just got a little easier for mobile QBs to beat the Steelers defense.

Spillane called it after Bush got injured, I would assume he will continue to do it.

Don't sleep on Spillane. That guy was a beast in the MAC. He was a grade A run-stopper. We'll see how he acclimates to the pass but I feel very optimistic. He just seems to have a flare with his style of play.

The Steelers do very well with pulling talent from the MAC.

    To name a few headliners:

    2019 -- DJ (and UG3)
    2018 -- Chuks'
    2010 -- AB
    2004 -- Ben
and another lowly MAC notable, 1974, Jake Lambert.
