What happens to bad refs?

I am curious exactly what the protocol is when a ref crew has a failure of a game? I know teams submit reports the league pointing out bad calls, and I know refs are graded with the best of the best doing playoff games.

But what is actually done in the event of clearly incorrect calls like so many that we saw last week?

It's truly hard to watch a game from a neutral point of view when you care about one team. But if you analyze the calls last week there were terrible calls on both sides.

Does someone take that crew and say "look, here is where you missed calls or made wrong calls" hoping to prevent it in the future?

I seem to remember hearing that they are all graded and that the best grades get the playoffs and sb. So basically, you are reffing your way to the big stage and big payday. Screw up and you get to golf with the bad teams in January.

Screw up real bad and you get witness protection.

Nothing. Just seems to get worse by the year. Grading? They all get F's. And this is league wide.

I remember a ref getting fired right after a game a couple seasons ago. He blew one call, a false start or something. His blown call decided the game.

There’s a whole review and grading system in place. Every ref is graded on every play after the game. There is even someone watching and “grading” while the game is being played. The referees that grade out the highest work the post season and super bowl. While the worst sit at home and possibly lose their jobs. There was a ref that was fired the next day after blowing a call in a Steelers game.

The quality of who is being hired has been decreasing for some time. Obviously.

Didn't someone on here used to be a ref at a certain level? I remember they had a great insight into what it was like from the ref's perspective.

Probably. I thought it was the season before that, but that incident is referred to in the article.

That was so bad it made me wonder about a gambling influence. Its impossible for someone to miss that. His sole job at that point in time is to watch the O line.

To paraphrase an old bumper sticker, "Good refs get to go to heaven but, bad refs get to go everywhere"
