The next few weeks will be true indicators of how strong this D is. Butler’s D is notorious for slow starts. Last year, the D didn’t really tighten up until after the Ravens game. If the D follows the same trajectory, it will go down as one of the best

compared to the rest of the league the Steelers defense has been pretty good they currently rank 3rd in yds allowed per game and 6th in pts allowed per game. If you want some truly horrid defenses look at the Cowboys who allow 36 pts a game or the undefeated Seahawks who gove up almost 500 yds oer game. Meaning there is no shutdown defense being played in the entire NFL and Steelers defense is still elite by comparison.

On the refs I heard an interesting stat recently, offensive holding penalties are down over 50% this year, 50%!! I don’t believe for a second that there is 50% less holding, in fact you can see our guys being held on virtually every play. That must be playing in to the higher scoring games across the league.

That said there certainly are issues to fix, guys running open in the secondary, allowing so many third downs, the stops they were getting last year just aren’t happening now.

The schedule has been very very kind and has allowed them to stack some wins while not being particularly formidable. We are still waiting for a convincing win. I thought we weee getting one Sunday when they went up three scores but they let the Eagles march down the field for two TD’s to make it a nail biter again.

 

Okay a Team must cover for a certain amount of time so the rush can get home . If a QB can read the D and know a safe spot to throw before the snap of course no rush or no blitz will get home.. Our D can cover long enough when we can disguise the coverage.. We simply can't man up and cover so once a Offense figures out the looks they will have a lot of success...

We really only have 1 good cover CB and we have a weak cover Safety and a LB that is a liability in coverage as well, so it's smoke and mirrors until we can upgrade the talent on the back ...

 

The defense struggled against good offenses last September, in other words. If that is an indicator I think they could be in trouble in October.

 

I can't recall a game with as much blatant holding going on as we saw yesterday... It was insane. Straight tackling dudes and no flags... TJ literally turned around with his hands up in the air with right tackle's arms around his waist on one play and no flag. I do recall seeing him at the end of the first half walking over to the refs which I presume was to say QUE PASO mofo's?

Nobody on here said the team doesn't have anything to work on, the secondary is a big concern, especially on third downs.

 

Last year, the opposing offenses got tired because they spent almost no time on the bench. Now, our offense is sustaining drives and they have time to rest

It’s an offensive driven league. Ravens are probably the closest to a shut down defense and they looked foolish vs mahomes.

If we can stop the conversions on 3rd and 15+ we will be fine.
