Who is the best player to ever don the black n gold in your opinion? I have to say Joe Greene, but there are about 5 more that are in the discussion - Franco, Lambert, Woodson, Blount, Polamalu.
Who is your favorite Steeler? Jack Ham, this week. Franco Harris, next week. LC Greenwood the week after that, then Troy, Ben, etc., etc.

Who is the most under-appreciated Steelers Hall of Famer? Franco's greatness is under appreciated in my opinion.
Since Shell is in the Hall of Fame, who is the most deserving that is retired and not in the Hall? For me it's LC Greenwood.

Most deserving? Hines Ward gets my vote.

Pretty much my sentiments. Franco will always be my favorite as my football interests greatly increased as a young man during his rookie season, and of course the IR sealed my Steeler fandom forever.

That's one of my problems with trying to decide the 'best' ever. Joe Greene was injured sometime in the mid 70's and took a different approach on the line that actually made others more productive. Cannot give the specifics, it was on a vid on you tube and after watching it just made me appreciate Joe more. The greatness was not just in his play, but adjusting his role for the team that others could shine even more. I also read something recently on the Steelers secondary for that time, Mel and Donnie we remember, but there were some other guys back there that had remarkable careers, notably Mike Wagner.

Just listening to Joe Greene tells me he was the driving force of the best defense ever. He gives most of the team success credit to Franco. Food for thought.

I think the defense was the deciding factor in that 6 year run.

The Steelers had several players that had the best technique for their respective position and incredible football instincts. Wagner was not the most athletic safety, but he could read plays and anticipate where the ball was going very well. Jack Ham was all about being in the right place at the right time. Lambert was known for his toughness, but he was another player that had amazing instinctiveness. Blount had all the physical tools, but he also knew how to bait QBs into throwing his direction.

And could you imagine Polamalu playing on that 70's defense, with how he read players and anticipated where the ball was going to be? Current players like Fitzpatrick and TJ Watt have incredible skills, but they also are around the football all the time.

I am sorry I can't do it, there is just too many.
Remember, when I was growing up those dynasty teams
were rock stars to us kids. I have been blessed to be able to call
the Steelers (my hometown) team all these years. It would be disservice
of me if I forgot some people .To be that good for all those years
it was definitely a team effort.

One thing people forget about Franco, he often ran out of bounds in order to save himself from big hits. But when he needed a yard he got it most of the time. Then when he got mad, look out nobody would get him.

While I believe even Franco acknowledged he did step out of bounds at times, I also think it was far more overblown than the actual stats would show (just my admittedly biased opinion, lol). You do not retire with over 12,000 rushing yards (3rd all time when he retired), 91 rushing TD's (also 3rd all time at retirement) by being a wimp, just saying.

    .
Oh he definitely didn't take hits he didn't have to. Very smart in that regards. Other tid bits about Franco is he was a slow healer when he did get hurt it seem like it took him longer to come back then other guys, but he truly was a great running back that ran behind a solid very good offensive line.

He definitely left yards on the field. No question. But I never felt he was "being a wimp." He was running smart. He ran upright and allowed a lot of off-pad impact. Live to fight another day in an era of "extracurriculars" after the tackle. Every opportunity taken to avoid the opposing defense from sticking it to the Steelers' starting tailback was a smart move.

I think you are in your 30's. You were not even a twinkle in your fathers eye when Green and Lambert were playing. You must love Steeler history.

I was at an exhibition game in Philadelphia when a rookie named Joe Greene came out of the tunnel. He saw our Steeler shirts and gave us a wave. I asked the older guys I was with who that was and I remember my brother-in-law saying he is the guy that is going to change things.
