Alright. The last time somebody posted one of these nobody got it. It's as easy as the title. 4 good players to decide from.

Start one, Sit one, Trade one, Cut one.

    Troy Polamalu
    Carnell Lake
    Minkah Fitzpatrick
    Donnie Shell

    For me

    Start

    Troy Polamalu

    Bench

    Carnell Lake

    Trade

    Minkah Fitzpatrick

    Cut

    Donnie Shell

Love all 4 players. Carnell Lake or Donnie Shell may be the safest start, but Troy was definitely the biggest playmaker in his prime. Minkah would hold the highest trade value due to youth. Shell for me was the odd man out.

Assuming all four players are in their prime, here is how I would go about such an endeavor.

    Start: Troy Polamalu

    Bench: Minkah Fitzpatrick

    Cut: Carnell Lake

    Trade: Donnie Shell

    Start

    Troy Polamalu

    Bench

    Minkah Fitzpatrick

    Trade

    Carnell Lake

    Cut

    Donnie Shell

All in their prime, playing today's game. The old school guys don't necessarily transition well to today's game, so they are out. Troy, even in his prime, was always one play away from injury. So even though Minkah would bring the best trade value, his value to the team in case of injury is greater.

How about WRs? Hines, AB, Swann, Stallworth.
    Start: Hines
    Bench: Stallworth
    Cut: Swann
    Trade: AB

AB would be start of he hadn't gone mental and crapped all over his team. Hines personifies steelers football.

    Start Hines
    Bench Stallworth
    Cut AB
    Trade Swann

AB is clearly the best among this bunch, but even in an imaginary scenario SB can't be trusted.

Sorry folks, but the sun never rose on a day where Hines Ward was a better Wr than Swann or Stallworth.

    Start: Swann
    Bench : Stallworth
    Trade : Hines
    Cut: AB

Swann was great but didn’t play long.

    Stallworth was very good.

AB was better than both but had brain problems.

Ward was adequate but couldn’t even wave at the above..

Imagine Swann's #s with today's rules & a pass happy QB. I can't say he was better than AB but it could be argued.

    Hines Ward
    1000 Rec 12083 Yds 85 Tds

    AB
    837 Rec 11207 Yds 79 Tds

    John Stallworth
    537 Rec 8723 Yds 74 Tds

    Lynn Swann
    336 Rec 5462 Yds 57 Tds

Keep in mind Hines Ward played his first 6 years with Kent Graham, Kordell Stewart, and Tommy Maddox throwing him the ball. He has more Pro Bowl selections than LS or JS, and more Super Bowl MVP selections than JS or AB. I'd say Hines ward wins this competition by a mile. Its really not even close.

Different eras with dramatically different rules governing pass defense.

So, you want to compare the numbers for WRs that played 16 game seasons where teams throw 34 times a game with those who played 14 game season with 24 pass atts per game?

Stallworth and Swann were first team All Pros, Hines never was. At the time Swann was regarded as the best WR in the game. Hines never was. Stall and Swann are in the HOF, the only way Hines gets in is if he goes to window at the entrance and buys an admission ticket. Your right about one thing, it's really not close.

Ward is below Swann and Stallworth for my list. AB’s position is dependent on if we are talking before or after the cheese slid off of his cracker.

AB might be the best.of the whole lot. But, as a rule teams are better off without crazy people on the roster

Comparisons get made all the time, and as you pointed out being in different eras also make those comparisons difficult to appreciate. As a homer Hines should be in the HOF, but the inflated numbers by other WR's in the era of increased throwing hide his other factors he brought to the game. For me Stallworth would be the keeper, perhaps not as flashy as Swannie, but I believe just as clutch and more durable and productive in his longer career.

The comparison is valid. Ward played on "3 yards and a cloud of dust" teams for almost all of his career. Early in Bens career, he was not putting the ball up 34 times a game. Kordell certainly wasn't either. During the Kordell era, Bettis got the ball on first and second down, and a lot of times Kordell would pull it down and run himself on third. Stallworth and Swann played with Bradshaw. Hines put up better numbers with significantly worse QB play during his career.

Hines will get in the HOF. Its only a matter of time.

very, very doubtful. As time goes on in this pass happy era, Hines' AMAZING 1000 catches! Will be the norm. Lots of guys will do that. Right now 6 guys are not in the HOF and have more rec than Hines. This number will grow, as the HOF take in a WR about once every 2 yrs. maybe, he had last until the leagues 150th anniversary, and get in the back door like Cowher and Jimmy Jonhnson

I sincerely hope that will not be the case. Hines is one of the greatest football players in NFL history. He has the numbers. But beyond that, Hines was one of the greatest blockers, as a receiver, in the history of the NFL. Hines was one of the toughest, hard hitting players, in the history of the NFL. Let's not forget that Hines was such a great athlete, that he was able to play quarterback at the university of Georgia.

This is a guy who was not fast, was not big, but was still able to put up huge numbers, especially when the Steelers needed it the most. If you add in an impeccable work ethic, a willingness to mentor younger players, an ability to lead, and his emotional involvement in all things Steeler, this is a guy that could have played in any era. This is a guy that I wish all current players aspired to emulate. There is not a more deserving player up for HOF consideration than Hines Ward. Lots of players have similar numbers, but very few have the same amount of intangibles.
