Probably isn't all about the money for the smart ones. Get in, make your dough, move on to your hobbies. These guys liven the dream & have a better chance of enjoying the fruits of their labor within the best time frame of their walk on Earth.

It's a different breed of athlete today. Guys used to play for the love of the game and "real" competitive spirit. Today, it's not even 50% about the sport. It's about the individual's brand, social positioning, and springboarding. Sucks. But that's the way of the world today.

Think about the sports writers back in the day. A gaggle of writers in a smokey room overlooking the field, preparing copy that would be distributed to media outlets across the country. If you didn't see the game on television or radio (a likely occurrence), you were relegated to waiting for the nightly news or the paper to show up Monday morning for results and commentary. Players didn't dictate the narrative. They did their talking on the field, and that was the story. Well, unless they did something bad off the field. Print was the way to get the story, and a slow one at that. The game was pure and the focus, unlike today.
