This Saturday the 18th at 3pm starts the games with draft prospects. This game if you don't know is more for the later round picks. I like this one because everyone knows the top guys but finding that diamond in the rough is cool.

This year I am not so pumped up for prospects in this game. I know in the past there were guys I just felt were strong prospects. Justin Hollins was my guy last year and the whole DT's as a group were good. This year I feel the East defense has a few guys worth looking at. The Miami LB's Quarterman and Pinckney are good prospects and Alex Highsmith(Charlotte) is a guy who could be a guy who can rush the passer for us. As the week goes on more news will come out as who to keep an eye on.......

Highsmith was definitely one I wanted to watch.

Also for the East - Jon Runyan OT Michigan (is this the son of NFLer Runyan?) and S Myles Dorn NC are guys I"m interested in.

For the West - OG Calvin Throckmorton Oregon is about the only one I've looked into.

    FYI

4:15 PM ET: Oregon’s OL Calvin Throckmorton is lining up as a guard during West practice and looks very natural. Love his vision, awareness and blocking feel.

    Also:

Throckmorton’s calling card to the league will be his versatility. He has played center when Jake Hanson was out due to injury or suspension during the past couple of seasons. He’s one of the best tackles in the conference. Athleticism is an underrated tool of his. He can play guard as well in a pinch. It’s interesting that he’s listed as a guard by the Shrine Game people.

I read this yesterday and this stood out to me:

"He looked like he needed a little training," said Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive assistant Antwaan Randle El, who is coaching the East wide receivers. "But you could see the way he snagged the ball out of the air. That's one of the things you look for in a young receiver -- can he catch the ball and catch it clean? And he had no issues doing that."

Perry said when he saw Randle El was going to be his coach this week, he turned on YouTube to watch videos of old Pittsburgh Steelers games, then saw some surprising older clips pop up from Randle El's days at Indiana.

"I didn't even know he played quarterback in college," Perry said. "I plan on sitting down with him throughout the week and talk about making that transition."

For the record the Steelers have nobody on the coaching staff, this kind of bothers me since this is an opportunity for us to know these guys a little better. jmo

Steelers have two assistants on the staff, one coaching the QBs and one another position but can't remember

The only other coach in attendance was Jacksonville's Doug Marrone. Teams that sent their GMs besides the Raiders: Atlanta (Thomas Dimitroff), Baltimore (Eric DeCosta), Buffalo (Brandon Beane), Carolina (Marty Hurney), Detroit (Bob Quinn), Green Bay (Brian Gutekunst), Jacksonville (Dave Caldwell), Minnesota (Rick Spielman), the Jets (Joe Douglas), Pittsburgh (Kevin Colbert) and Tennessee (Jon Robinson).

D.J.'S DAY 2 WINNERS: NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah is here this week, prepping for Saturday's broadcast of the game. He'll be highlighting standout players in this notebook each day of practice. Here are his Day 2 winners:

» Arkansas DT McTelvin Agim: "He was the best player I saw today. He's so explosive. They couldn't block him in one-on-ones. He stands out. Every year, there's a guy like that at this game that jumps out; he's the guy this year. If you're looking for a battlefront promotion guy (late invite to the Senior Bowl), that might be the guy."

» Syracuse pass rusher Kendall Coleman: "He had a really good day. He's got a great get move. He can dip and bend around the edge to get to the top of his rush and flatten. He was great in one-on-ones."

» Central Florida RB Adrian Killins Jr.: "He's tiny (5-7, 164) but he reminds me a lot of De'Anthony Thomas, who was drafted in the fourth round by the Chiefs in 2014. He's going to be a specialty player with lots of juice and speed. He caught the ball really well."

» Michigan OL Jon Runyan Jr.: "He was playing guard today. You can just tell he's been coached very well. He's tough, smart. He's Steady Eddy. He didn't wow but he had a really solid day."

» Auburn OL Jack Driscoll: "He was the guy who moved the best on the East offensive line. He was just an easy mover."

» Indiana WR Nick Westbrook: "He had the best day of any receiver. Real crisp and clean with his routes and he caught the ball naturally. Speed might be an issue. I talked with him and he's targeting the low 4.5s. If he can run that range, he has a chance to be a really good player. Speed is the only question on him."

» Illinois State RB James Robinson: "He carries his weight (219 at 5-9) well, ran good routes, caught the ball real well, and showed some juice.

    Day 4 practice notes

THURSDAY WALK-THROUGH: The final day of practice at this event is traditionally a walk-through prep for Saturday's game. This year was no exception. Players practiced in shorts with no contact. And the scouts and NFL personnel along the sidelines and in the Tropicana Field stands had thinned out dramatically.

JAGS, LIONS, JETS ... OH, MY: Before many left town after Wednesday's practices, the Trop was littered with NFL scouts and coaches, but no teams were represented more than the Jaguars, Lions and Jets. Those three teams all had 14 representatives attend practices. The teams to send the fewest: the Bengals (three), closely followed by the Rams (four) and Steelers (four).

NO ORDINARY JOE: Virginia's Joe Reed had a solid but quiet week of practice at wide receiver, but it will be interesting to see how he does as a return man in Saturday's game. In 2019, he won the Jet Award for college football's top return specialist, and he's the only player in FBS history with 3,000-plus kick return yards to average at least 28 yards per return. He's an interesting, multi-faceted weapon who should see his stock boosted by his return skills. By the way, only one Jet Award recipient has failed to be drafted in the first four rounds since the award started in 2011, and that's because the player was only a sophomore and ineligible for the draft. In a deep receiver class, Reed is projected as a possible late-round pick.

POSSIBLE POSITION SWITCH: Oregon wide receiver Juwan Johnson had some big moments at Penn State before transferring to Oregon this past season, where he sealed the Ducks' Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin with a nice catch and run late in the game. However, injuries and drops hampered his college career. He's the biggest receiver (6-4, 231) in St. Pete's this week, and many here believe he's headed to tight end at the next level. The lack of speed he showed in practices and his history of drops, plus his monster blocking skills, might dictate a switch. Some see him similarly to Ricky Seals-Jones, a big-bodied receiver at Texas A&M who now is an effective matchup tight end for the Browns.

NEW MILITARY RULES: Navy's triple-option quarterback Malcolm Perry, whom we wrote about on Monday and who has worked out here as a slot receiver, says he's likely to defer his two remaining years of commitment to the Navy after the rules regarding deferment for athletes were relaxed recently. At the request of President Donald Trump, U.S. defense secretary Mark Esper signed a memo late last year that now allows service secretaries to nominate an athlete for a professional sports waiver. It was before Perry's record-setting performance in Navy's big victory over Army in the season finale last year that Trump walked into each team's locker room and announced his plans. Perry said it was met with applause. As for Perry's week at practice, his transition looked smooth. He could be a very intriguing late-round pick for a team looking to utilize his multi-faceted skill set.

Don't forget we have derwin Gray sitting here that we drafted last year. He was the 27th ranked olineman from a year ago. Signing finney should be a priority. JCH is also sitting here. One of these Swiss army knife capable types with center ability would be welcome.

Maybe Gray moves into guard for foster and finney remains the main interior bu. Chuks is here and banner and feiler need signed. It shouldn't break the bank.

I am still leaning towards speed at wr and ilb early at 2 and 3.

I guess I just don't see the need at WR, DJ is suppose to be our speed guy and we are pretty set with Juju, JW and Cain. All we need is a guy who can throw the ball to them.......hi Ben! As for guys being able to step in fine but them guys need replacing then too. And I just don't have very high hopes for guys coming from our reserve/futures list..........

Gray was a draft pick. Most of our line were udfa.

DJ isn't a speed guy. 4.5. He is quick but not really a speed threat. Cain possibly could be. He has some size and some speed but we don't have that burner.

Marino had the marks. Mahomes has two of the fastest in the league. I'd love to see Ben have one.

I wish we had draft assets to trade for Harmon, he would help this O and special teams big time.
