Why is Rivers included in this SB winning old guard?

Nobody wanted him, they wanted Eli.

Yeah, it's getting close. Flacco is also done. Rodgers won't be too far behind. Lot of HOF QB's leaving in the next 2-3 years.

Brees still year to year contract wise? Get away from Payton & pull a Peyton. Bears could use him.

Young Guns - Jackson, Mahomes, Watson, Burrows, Tui, Herbert, Lawrence, Fields. The NFL QB pool looks bright. Can the Steelers get another franchise QB?

I'm afraid we'll be in QB hell for awhile. So hard when you never get a good pick. Even when we suck. Even then, it's a crap shoot. You have to get so lucky .

Actually, Cowher wanted Rivers, thought he was the best of the class.

Then he was going to draft a lineman (who was out of football after 2010) before they settled on Ben. Which is said to be Rooneys doing, citing he didn't want another Marino situation unfolding again.

It doesn't take a good pick to get a franchise qb. It takes a lot of luck. Some of the stat-smiths around here can probably put together a list of elite qb's and their draft position as well as the busts taken high in the draft. I'll go out on a limb and say more high draft pick qb's than not have not lived up to the hype.

I'm a broken record with this, but you make your own luck. Want to get lucky in the draft with a qb? Draft him after you have put together a solid OL. Nothing develops a young qb like time in the pocket and the ability to run the ball.

Rivers was a great qb at nc state. Even Matt Schaub from Uva was good coming out of college. Todd Blackledge from Penn state was rated higher then Marino ... when they both came out of college. So, you have... what I call fad qbs ex .. mike vick and culpepper (electrifying but only for a moment) ... then serviceable qbs (Romo and Rivers) ... and then hofers ....you know brady, manning, brees, and ben. It's a blessing to get the caliber of the latter

Thank God he became trading fodder. Just don't like the guy...then there is the 'better than Ben' hogwash. Hope he goes to Cleveland...lol

Steve Young was sort of a bust in Tampa Bay before he went to San Francisco. You need a supporting cast including a rb and OL. That said, I don’t think recycled Mariota is the answer as he stunk when Tannehill is succeeding. CJ Beathard might be worth a shot. He has the arm and accuracy.

All QBs are great in college which is why they get drafted. But that doesn't always translate into achieving success as an NFL QB. Every hot shot QB in college right now could fail miserably in the NFL just as much as they could possibly succeed. Just look at what Chicago did to get Tribiski and would you say it was worth it? Its a crap shoot IMO>

Agreed on changing of the guard. This year has been no coincidence as many of us have been seeing. The next generation is ready to take over.

Much like the seasons, the great QBs of the 2000s Class has approached its "Winter Phase". All those great QBs of that era are either done or will be soon. Time to let the young men take over.

Each generation must surpass the next. The QBs of the 2000s had their fun in the sun. Let the next generation take over as it is their time now.

    Act
Actually, I think we would have been fine with Rivers, He was always a " good " QB...Early in Ben's career we had some really stout defenses, Then added the Bus, pretty good offensive weapons, then the killer B era...Think Rivers would have shined...

Rivers played on some really bad teams, with some really bad defenses

I don't think he will leave but i like his SB chances with the Bears, Titans, Rams, Colts better than with Payton the pretender. Sean waiting on the refs to gift him another appearance so he can run his trick plays.

    With most of it.

    Rivers shining? :roflmao:

Bad teams? He had some SB teams that he choked out of the playoffs.

He had some Super Bowl teams that he carried...Off the top of your head, Name the good receivers had pre Keenan Allen...Gates was always his top receiver, and defenses were garbage

Look at his playoff stats at profootball reference.com...he is nothing, trading fodder, a pick niether the Giants or Chargers wanted to be their franchise savior.
He doesn't have good receivers because of HIM. Can't send anyone but his checkdown Gates to the probowl. Nobody would have heard of AB, Plaxico, Santonio, Sanders, etc. with Rivers throwing the ball.

A nice stat I saw during one of the games Saturday. The four top passing teams this year and none made the playoffs. The four top rushing teams all made the playoffs.
