Tim Ryan, white guy, ex nfl lineman and radio jock, commented on air during the ratbird/49 game that Lamar Jackson's dark skin and dark uniform blended with the brown football and made it hard for the defense to distinguish the ball on zone-read running plays and play-action passing plays.

He was suspended a few days later.

I hate the pc world we live in. It isn't about being sensitive and considerate for others. It is about dividing us in any and every aspect of our lives. The world is devolving into two types of people, the offended and the offendees.

There was nothing racial about what Ryan said. There was no malice. But because a white man commented that, gasp, Lamar Jackson had dark skin, he must be punished.

By the way, Richard Sherman went on record saying that because of LJ's dark skin and dark uniform, they had difficulty distinguishing the football on film. I guess when a black man makes a valid point to the media it's okay, but when a white commentator does it, it's offensive.

    Madness.

    Disclaimer:
I am a 50 year old white male. For the record, my father was Syrian and my mother Swedish. Yes, I am a strange concoction.

I have no politically correct right to speak on race, but my best friend growing up was black. I wanted to be like him. I wanted to be black. He was just cooler and far more athletic than myself and the other white kids we grew up with. I looked up to his brother, had a crush on his sister, and thought his parents were amazing. His dad looked like Franco. That was the icing on the cake.

So I at least saw their struggles and grew up with an understanding that blacks were viewed and treated differently than whites. That is my perspective.

Let me add that even though this post has racial undertones, I am not intending to make this about race. Race happens to be the issue in this instance, but the problem being brought up is not racism but the pervasive PC, everyone-is-offended-by-something devolution of our society.

It is so systemic that it has permeated and latched on to football at the highest levels.

Maybe I'm just too old and crotchety to accept the changes in the world around me. This problem is everywhere, not just football. But since we're talking about football here, and this happened in the football arena, I'm bringing it up for discussion.

Can't stand this new PC world we live in. I'm simply not cut out for it. I belong in different times.

I have nothing but respect for Tim Ryan. Always have, always will

I don’t think it’s people being so easily offended. It’s more people having opportunities to call someone out for a major misstep (racism in this case) with much less risk of being attacked for it. You get to be publicly holier-than-thou without serious backlash.

While I agree with you on our pc world the comment itself is just plain stupid. There have been people with dark skin in dark uniforms playing football for decades without issue and suddenly this wingnut thinks it’s an issue.

Just the messenger here but Richard Sherman agreed with Ryan and said the same thing was evident to him (and others) while watching game film. He just didn't condone Ryan's specific wording. That begs the question then of Sherman: "How exactly would you have said it"? On a side note, can you imagine if they required golf balls to be green? (or in my case sand colored or pond scum brown?)

Having a hard time following that. Only thing I can comment on is that I don't think there was ANYTHING racist about what was said. It was only a misstep BECAUSE people are so easily offended.

Well, yeah, but the sample size of black qb's in dark uniforms with a similar skillset to LJ's is much much smaller. The best comparison is Vick, but he didn't run the zero read option nearly as much as LJ. Slash did it some, but he was more successful making his rat face in the huddle or getting punked by Romanowski.

It's an issue because he's so successful at it and no one has figured out how to stop it.

I think Sherman could have just said it. He's black. So it would have been acceptable.

And I didn't want to make this about race, but it's stupid when a white guy can't point out the obvious and say a black guy has dark skin.

"Lamar Jackson has dark skin. -The Glory Days"

If that makes me a racist, then I guess I am one.

Yeah I don’t see anything racist about it. It’s just a factual statement. “The ball was harder to see because of his skin tone”.

good for Lamar it’s an advantage. Oh crap I’m now a racist bigot.

    Dammit guys I’m sorry

Imagine the advantage Whitey Ford had with light toned skin chucking a white baseball wearing a white uni during a day game against the White Sox and with a name like that! :hmm:
