As of right now we have an estimated 6.7 million in cap space next season.

He is due 2021 earliest at which point Ben might be gone, Heyward, Pouncey AV and some other big earners might be going too, rebuild time! I wouldn’t be worrying about it just yet. There might be an opportunity to have one last crack at it while they are all there in 2020 and Minkah and others are still on rookie deals.

Cap will probably increase by 8-10 million again and there are $20m in relatively easy cuts to be made, move a bit of money around and all of a sudden there is $30m available. It will be easily spent though.

He still does that. Bad angles, patty cake. Makes a splash play here and there. That's it. And we had to wait for 5 years to see this progress all the while Watt came right out of the gate. I'm not on the love fest for Alvin. He will go somewhere else and disappear all the while being way overpaid.

Yep, he seems to make a play here and there but will disappear the majority of the time. Also, forget about the pass rush, he never, and I mean never sets the edge, watch the running plays to his side. Bud also loses contain on the QB with regularity, I'll admit he looks better this year but not much and a lot of it is from playing really bad teams.

Terrell has ability issues you can't fix with coaching. He can't cover and he doesn't look for the ball...EVER. Tyler Boyd's catch, he was looking at the ball and then he turned away and just stuck his arm up and didn't even jump but instead stood on his tip toes. You aren't going to fix that, and how about all his missed tackles?? I'm sorry but what I see is a guy with tremendous athletic ability with no clue how to use it on the football field. He may be able to get some of the tackling issues corrected but his coverage skills are never going to get better, that one play showed that.

He has been on the field enough that he should be getting better, how many splash plays has he had? Think of how bad the safeties have been that they go out and get 1 guy and he racks up INTS, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries and TDs in a short time and Edmunds has had 1.5 seasons and hasn't even come close. I know, it really isn't a fair comparison but like it or not Edmunds is a bust and the same issues that plagues Artie Burns I see in Edmunds, he just lacks the instinct needed at that position and you can't coach it.

Again, we are talking about his first three years in the league. Cannot compare anything that happened after. For that matter, J.J. did not hit the injury bug until year 6. His first five years he played all sixteen games.

    Agree to disagree then overall.

Much of what you said applied to Bud even when he was not injured; lacking instincts namely. Again, Terrell has not properly settled into the position of Strong Safety yet. He is not like Minkah or even Derwin in which he was used as a Defensive Back but was put in different positions overall. Terrell literally played musical chairs during his time at Virgina Tech.

Give Terrell some time. He will develop.... even if it is at a snails pace. Has to pick up soon though.

I guess we will find out, when the Steelers re-signed some of their role players in the past, the local media were surprised that those players took those deals.

They have Minkah under his rookie contract for 2 more years, then they can pick up his 5th year option.

Steelers will pay Bud. They didn't cultivate him for 5 seasons to let someone else reap the rewards.

He'll likely finish with at least 10 sacks. PFF has him graded with 82.9, that's a big jump from previous years.

Whatever you attribute his improved play to, it's a lot better and I don't see the Steelers letting him go unless he's looking for insane money.

I think Bud is a much better run defender than you are giving him credit for. He's made a bunch of huge run stops this year.

Blast he will ask for insane money, well his agent will. Teams will salivate over his sudden emergence and look at the splash he all of a sudden brought out and look past all the below average play we have experienced for years. Favor of the month and teams will overpay for a pass rusher. Hopefully we won't. Their is only one OLB on this defense that will get insane money as he deserves.

They have Ola Adeniyi, Tuzar Skipper and Chickillo right now. Draft. We will be fine without Alvin. Money better spent on keeping the Gravedigger.

You seem to have a good grasp on the cap. I know there are certain players who get raises based on performance, not sure how that is calculated but read somewhere that JuJu and Conner fall into that. Not sure of the significance, but as you said even if they get to 30 mill it can go quickly. Also in the Q and A portion on the Steelers site Labriola brought up the cost to franchise Bud at 16 million (he said he would consider it strongly). Of course if a long term deal is reached on the tag a lot of that is pushed down the road, but if no contract is signed then 16 of that possible 30 is gone to one player. I just do not see the team doing much beyond trying to keep some of their own.

I would not be totally against franchise tagging him if the team feels that they have a genuine shot at a championship next season. You have Ben back and if you keep the defence together and improve enough on offence who knows what their ceiling is.

Long term I think they probably need to move on from Bud though. Watt is going to be looking for mega bucks and it will be hard to keep both on long term deals.

Chickillo sucks and should be cut, he's not worth 4 million a year. Skipper and Ola haven't done anything in this league, that would be a big drop off from Dupree's production this season.

The Steelers do not have a viable option behind Dupree right now. Perhaps Adeniyi or Skipper will get there, but right now neither guy has shown he can be a starter. Chickillo has proven he cannot.

    Hey BK99.

Has improved? Yes. Dramatically? No! This project is running into year#5 and although there is "some" improvement, it is by no means by leaps and bounds. He is an upgrade over Jarvis Jones but not to the point that justifies breaking any bank on him. He has been a sporadic difference maker at best. I would take or leave him. Probably take him though as we would have to start all over again at that spot. Once again, the time and money that has been invested in Jarvis, and now him, have for the most part is/was a waste, IMO. Neither lived up to pre-draft billings.

I'll come back to you after this Cinderella story ends and they give him an extension and "contact year bud" turns back into a pumpkin.

I'm still not a believer, I've seen this movie before. If he wants to sign a cheap bridge deal and we'll see if he really turned it around great, but I'm scared to death of them overcommiting to him and being stuck with another anchor of a contract.
