True statement. What would the record be if those games didn't come down to a last minute fumble?

You expect this offense to score a lot of points to dominate their opponents , they were in the game until the end with the two best teams in the league the 49ers and the Ravens.

Why is that a facepalm? It's true. The Steelers had a real shot against both the Ravens and the 49ers.

You can certainly argue that the Steelers are a play or two away from 8-3, but you can also argue it the other way. They just struggled to beat the worst team in the NFL. They needed big breaks late in the game to beat both the Colts and the Rams.

The most sensible approach is to stop talking about a lucky break either way changing their season and look at the Steelers as what they are. They are 6-5 with a shot to make the playoffs, but it's going to be a struggle in every game to get there.

    Hey Disco1981.

Been awhile my friend. I can feel your passion, the pain, the mental anguish every time you comment on Tomlin (smile and laughing). I get it brother! He is a "Big Underachiever". He was in over his head when he got the HC gig. It just took some time for the smoke to subside so all of us, who are seeing clearly, can see the dud that he is as a coach. It is fact that he was successful with Cowher's players. No denying. Those that are blind loyalists to him have their reasons. And to that I respect their opinions but do not at all agree with them. Time usually has a way of providing transparency for most things in life. For those that are still not seeing the obvious at this point, probably never will.

It is kind of like my step-grandson's school. The children there come "Gift-Wrapped" to these teachers and some teachers still complain and underachieve based on what I have seen from an academic standpoint. I, along with my fiancée, had to step in and teach him how to read write, and do arithmetic. I work with him everyday. Most of my career is based at the high-school level so this was also good for me to work with a child so closely at the elementary level.

Most of the children there come "School-Ready". All the teachers have to do is keep up the great parental work that was had been taking place at home and not drop the baton. I got frustrated with the school last week that is why I am making this parallel.

About Tomlin's "infamous" words: "He likes to run his RB's into the ground." I commented on this several weeks ago. This is what pre-maturely ended "Fast" Willie Parker's career. As a teacher/coach it is one of the most idiotic statements I have ever heard on so many fronts. Leave some gas in the tank when possible.

Give some other players some reps when possible. They want to play also. On top of receiving a paycheck, how frustrating is it knowing you put in all the work each week only to have to ride the pine for sixty minutes and not even sniff the ball. I could go on all day as to why his comment/philosophy is totally insane and illogical. I thought the man was supposedly smart. He attended The College of William and Mary which I believe should speak volumes about his intellect. Well, there are book smarts an other kinds of smarts. I not sure what type(s) he has. Must be some kind as he has been around for what, twelve years now. I guess I can give him credit for that charade.

Well Disco, holler back if you get a chance my friend. Take care.

Below is my "Homefield" Sports Complex from back in the day. Stay humble "D".

Click on it to enlarge. A lot of good times there. Amongst other sports, we used to play tackle football on the cement. Speaking of smarts, we did uses pads such as those for skating, biking etc. We did have a little common sense (smile). I lived in the Housing Projects in the background which have long been torn down. Just a little STEELWINDS bio stuff. East Side!

    Hey Formerscribe.

Yes, we constantly hear that a lot of games are decided by a few plays. Very true. I commented on this a while ago. The way I see it, and I know the reverse argument can be made, but we really could be in first place if not for a number of blunders from players not named Mason. Well, that is how the cookie crumbles unfortunately. And yes, it P-s me off to no end as I rewind those scenarios. Just like last year. Just one more win and the division and playoffs were ours. Someone here stated that it goes both ways. I get that. However, we controlled our destiny with a 2.5 game lead and just blew it. That was my rebuttal argument. Shoot, if we win that first game against the Browns, instead of a tie that would have got us over the top. That, IMO, is straight-up on the shoulders of the coaching staff.

Given that, and as I agree with you, we can only move forward. As I like to say we are still "Significant" in the standings so, let's grab our destiny and fulfill it for some post-season ball.

You got that right steelersrule6. I hope all is good with you.

Add to that, the tip pick that Moncrief blundered in the Seattle game that eventually lead to a TD and a loss. Man it is frustrating. we really could be in 1st place right now. Man, I am starting to get PO-ed right now.

It's difficult to have a rational discussion with people that hate Tomlin. He will always be hated by select members of this fan base. They don't seem to want to look at the situation rationally. They will let the disappointments cloud their judgement and opinions.

I’ve been critical of Tomlin as well but if you really think about it, who in the league is much better?? I mean the guy in SF is doing well, Harbaugh got a gift with Jackson and obviously the cheat does well. But other than those, who is there? Last year they were going to put McVay in the HOF early and put a Greek god statue of him in Inglewood. Now they are in full collapse even with a 2 billion dollar payroll. I mean the guy in Carolina was the second coming, then he was trying to keep his job. Would you want Garrett or the failure at Atlanta? Tomlin has been consistent for years, always fielding a competitive team. I feel the Steelers suffer from that success. We consistently pick at the end of the rounds, we miss out on players like Fitzpatrick and Bosa. We don’t get the Clowneys or the top o line guys. We have persevered with second chance players, developed guys and luck (Watt). Truth is he has done a good job, I just think he needs to keep a little more distance from the QB and other senior players. Make sure everyone is a player and the expectations are the same.

Who is an apologist? Who thinks Tomlin is the greatest thing since sliced bread?

Tomlin is a good coach. Only one coach is clearly better since Tomlin became the head coach of the Steelers.

Mediocrity- Tomlin coached teams were above .500 most seasons. Making the playoffs 8 iut of 12 seasons shouldn't be considered medocre in anyone's book. I don't think anyone celebrates an 8-8 season. That being said people can place 8-8 in the proper perspective.

Sometimes finishing 8-8 goes beyond coaching. The Steelers kicker didn't play well and QB lead the league in turnovers in 2018. Those two factors were the main reasons why the team finished 8-8. They also had untimely turnovers by other players last that cost the team a chance to win more games. Those issues go beyond coached control.

I don't believe in the thought process of playing down to the level of the competition at the professional level. That being said, Tomlin doesn't play in the games. So there's no such thing as Tomlin playing down to the competition. Players that don't play well falls players.

Not making adjustments? How do you know? Break down every game and prove these coaches never made adjustments. Sometimes I wonder if people really believe some of the stuff they type.

Where is the consistently losing record that proved Tomlin was outcoached on a regular basis?

Tomlin isn't perfect but he also is far from the bad coach you portray. Again only one coach was clearly better in 13 seasons.

Tomlin is an average coach who has benefited from good coordinators. Believe it or not... Arians, Haley and LeBeau were damn good coordinators. The jury is still out on Butler... but it looks like he's trending upward with the addition of Bush, Nelson, Fitzpatrick, etc. IMO, it's difficult to pass judgment on Finctner since injuries have devastated the offense.

I wanted Tomlin gone at the end of last season. He’s a really good coach. I just felt like we needed to change. Looks like I was probably wrong. He’s done an outstanding job keeping things together this season.

Context is everything. There are many data points to support Tomlins failures coaching a team with well above average talent. Here are few that support Tomlins mediocrity and why he isn't a champion. Like I said, I don't celebrate mediocrity and don't accept apologies and excuses for underachieving.

Tomlin can't beat the top teams consistently. Case in point is Tomlins record against the patsies is 3-8. Average margin of victory in his 3 wins is 12 points. Average margin of victory for pats against Tomlin is 16 points.

Tomlin plays down to opponents particularly on the road. Case in point,Tomlins record against .500 or less teams on the road is 17-20 since 2012. I stopped at 2012 because I got too depressed. This includes 0-3 against the raiders on the road. Bonus, tomlin is only 2-6 against the raiders which includes a loss to them at home. For reference, the raiders have sucked balls with only 1 winning season (2016) during Tomlins time as steelers head coach. And guess what, they have owned Tomlin. Tell me again how that isn't playing down to the competition?

Tomlins career playoff record leading the Steelers is average at best at 8-7. This includes 4 seasons that he didn't even make the postseason and this year will likely be the 5th. And 4 times he went 1 and done in the postseason.

In the current decade, with a future HOF QB, all pro WRs, great RBs, his playoff record is 3-5 with 4 years not making postseason and 3 years 1 and done. That is not even mediocre.

Tomlin is terrible at clock management and challenges. I dont know what stats to back up the clock management, so I'll go with the eye test on that one. For challenges, he is 34 for 76 or 44%. The past 3 seasons he is 3 for 15 or 20%. This includes 2018 and 2017 where he was 0 for 9. This isn't even mediocre, it is straight up hot garbage.

These are facts, not just my opinion. Tomlin is a mediocre coach and he gets mediocre results. I want Tomlin gone because I'm not satisfied with mediocre and you shouldnt be either. He has done a decent job coaching this season through a crap ton of injuries, I'll give him that. But he does just enough to reel his supporters back in only to let them down again. Tomlin has underachieved since the last SB appearance with outstanding talent on the roster. That is a decade of underachieving. That would get most HCs fired. But Tomlin is still trading on memories of SB appearances that are 10 years old.

Sorry for the long post, but you Tomlin apologists asked for it. You want facts to back up his mediocrity? There ya go.
