The NFL players are a very low class of citizen and it's getting worse every year.

These guys beat up women and the NFL helps keep that out of the limelight because to let it be exposed would hurt the NFL image.

These guys don't care when someone else gets suspended for a handful of games. But Garrett crossed the line on national TV and the NFL can't hide it. This is the NFL's chance to pretend they "really" care about the product that is rapidly turning to garbage.

If a talent like Garrett were suspended permanently, you can bet your butt that it would make every other player in the league take notice and it would set the stage for the NFL to also take a hard stance on the lack of character off the field as well.

This is the perfect opportunity for the NFL make the much needed change in the direction the league is headed; unfortunate, we all know the NFL isn't interested.

    BUT THEY SHOULD BE!

I don't know that a permanent suspension would change these guys as much as you think.

And the NFL doesn't want to go down this rabbit hole. It wants to look like it is heavy handed, but if it actually started punishing these guys for crimes like average citizens, half the league would be behind bars. That isn't good for its brand if all the talent is incarcerated.

Thing is, these are just dudes. They are a microcosm of our society. The only difference is that they aren't always held to the same standard that "normal" people are.

Totally disagree. People make mistakes. Many people benefit from 2nd chances. He doesn't have a history that I know of. I'd reinstate him next season with some successful counseling.

Garrett was one of the most penalized and fined players this season prior to the game against us.

    Hey 86WardsWay.

Depending on the offense. I have no problem with second chances for some people in life. Myles tried to seriously hurt (kill?) Mason. It was a very serious offense. Like you stated suspension for the rest of the year and some counseling and then a serious psychological re-evaluation. I have worked in the prison system. Trust me, very few actually come back to society as so called " rehabbed" regarding the actions from what I saw Myles do. Maybe it was a one time incident maybe not. I do remember him saying something along the lines of "Getting Ben" as he was to play Pittsburgh for the first time in his career. Not a good sign or segue if this is any indication of his personality.

    Hey Stone.

You hit the nail on the head with your comment: "it's getting worse every year". Given that, if Garrett worked at a corner store for instance, do you think that he would be allotted a second chance by the owner? Probably not. However, this is football, entertainment. A big "Cash Cow". So, short of murder, the NFL will do whatever it can to keep employing its staff. It will throw a suspension and a fine here and there to appease the outraged but in the end Dickdell knows what the fans want. He is a two-faced hypocrite.

Even if Garrett was suspended permanently it would "possibly" deter others from doing the same thing. However, just look no further than the five O'clock news or our prisons across the country. Convicted murderers everyday and yet it continues everyday. So, no, I do not believe that a permanent suspension would affect as many mindsets as you would hope it would.

Yeah, I just keep hoping that the NFL will grow some responsibility and the younger generation who thrive on violence and lack of accountability will have to go back to violent video games for their fix. I know.....I'm a dinosaur:shrug:

But here is the chance of a lifetime (literally) for the NFL to make a change because Garrett did something that has never been done in the history of the league.

    Hey Stone.

Yeah, I got ya'. And never give up trying. As a teacher, that is one of my daily creeds. I hate the term "Let's make this a teachable moment". Too cliché' for me. However, it does apply here. With something as you stated : "that has never been done in the history of the league". You are right. Make a swift and stern "first time-first time" example here.

I'm not arguing with you, but consider this...so was Deebo in his day. And he did a lot more damage playing within the rules than Garret did with the helmet.

I haven't watched the browns, so I don't know how egregious his fouls were. In today's NFL, he might not have done anything wrong.

That being said, I'd rather take my chances with Garret and Mason's helmet than a pissed off silverback.

Agreed, make it a stern punishment but, it has happened before. I thought Matuszac, or at least Alzado had done it but couldn't find any evidence. Turns out it was a game in '54 between the Colts and Rams. So, what Garrett did was unique in the modern NFL. Either way, he deserves to be suspended and his name lumped in with the Suhs and Sapps of the league!

I can`t remember a player ever ripping a helmet off another player then using that helmet as a weapon on his unprotected head and I saw football during years when it was more violent. It may have happened before, but I don`t remember.

There is no choice for Goodell. To let that guy come back would fly in the face of everything they are trying to do to protect players. It sends the message, YOU DO THIS AND YOU ARE OUT OF THE NFL. Plain and simple. I would be shocked if this is not the outcome.

Would never happen. Garrett will be reinstated week 1 of next season. He is a big name star and the NFL makes millions off his likeness and promotion of the violence he causes on the field.

Not going to happen. Nevermind that Myles is a superstar pass rusher either. The NFL PA would fight that like HELL into the U.S. Supreme Court against the league as the NFL has no rule permabanning players; actions of that players own doing being nugatory.

So was Harrison when he played, but no one on here wanted him suspended.

Garrett plays a certain way and sometimes crosses the line. The helmet incident isn't part of the game and he should be, and is, being punished. He's missing a lot of games and losing a lot of money. With that said, I don't believe in banning someone to send a message to others. Either he deserves to play again or he doesn't, and I'm all for second chances. It's not as if Garrett has done something like this before.

Besides, the death penalty has been proven not to reduce crime whatsoever, so banning him for life clearly won't accomplish anything other than he doesn't get to play again

    No.

The punishment handed down right now, imo, is appropriate and he should be reinstated next year.

A permanent ban could also have some bad consequences. Examples could include:

    • All sorts of organizations asking the NFL to permanently ban players for all types of behaviors they think are worse
    • The NFL then having to ban players for borderline cheap plays
    • Those banished becoming worse people. Those without a chance at redemption don't have much of an incentive to reform

Harrison is a good counterpoint. He also had a history of violence and issues with anger management before arriving in the NFL and he was accused of domestic abuse.

His off-the-field history really has no relevance here. He was brought up in reference to Garret being penalized.

If Vontaze Burfict is part of the NFL and has had so many 2nd chances, Garrett deserves his too.

He will be back next season.

    Hey santeesteel.

Yeah there are two other Bozos (Suhs and Sapp) you mentioned. Put Burfict in there is well. I remember when "Mean Joe" kicked, I believe, a Brownie in the crotch one time. Now, that is okay. Why, you may ask? Because he was/is a Steeler. Simple enough.:clapping:

Growing up in an AFC west town, of course, most of the games we saw were those teams. Everybody knows about the Raiders but, the Chiefs from that era were dirty players! I vividly remember one game here where 2 Chief players held a Charger MLB by the arms while a third kicked him in the stomach! Chiefs/Raiders games got brutal!

I think you are comparing apples and baseballs. Harrison played hard and was a punishing player, he was often fined for his on field play because he spoke his mind about king Roger.

He did NOT use a weapon to attack anyone.

Myles Garrett, and numerous other Browns players led by Mayfield, is currently serving needy people at a Thanksgiving Meal shelter in Cleveland..........
