Steelers, Tomlin Fined For Inaccurately Listing Roethlisberger On Injury Report Prior To Week 2

    By Alex Kozora
    Posted on November 1, 2019

The NFL has fined the Pittsburgh Steelers $75,000 and Mike Tomlin another $25,000 for failing to list QB Ben Roethlisberger on the injury report prior to Week 2’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, according to this tweet from NFLN’s Ian Rapoport.

Mason Rudolph might’ve been the man who spilled the beans about it, telling reporters he was aware Roethlisberger had discomfort in his elbow during the week.

Leading up to that game, Roethlisberger had Wednesday off, normal for his schedule, before practicing in full on Thursday and Friday. His absence and return was listed as “coaches decision” and “not injury related.”

Roethlisberger tore a muscle in his right elbow in the second quarter of the Seahawks’ game. The team announced he would need season-ending surgery the next day.

Despite the fines, it appears the league didn’t take away any of the team’s draft picks for 2020. So the impact won’t be felt by anything other than Art Rooney II’s and Mike Tomlin’s wallet.

Could it have almost ended Ben's career?

Gosh if you're looking for just another reason to fire someone.

Drama queen Ben ... get MRI's and cat scans any other time. Why didn't the team check it out ... if nothing more, then a precautionary measure?
Whole team has gone to Hell

Makes you wonder when the Injury occurred. I thought he looked off during camp and preseason.

If he walks away after the injury the Steelers would be looking at 55 million in dead cap money for the next 2 years because of the injury guarantees in his new contract that he signed in April.

The day I was at training camp he was spinning it fine.
Maybe Ben, like all other people sometimes do thought it was
a pulled muscle or something and didn't say anything to the medical
staff hoping it would go away?

Same here, when we were at camp. Ben looked great and didn't appear to have any discomfort, but I heard reports after game 1 against the Pats that he had been dealing with it for a while. Still not sure what was actually going on.

It takes a month to investigate an injury report? Not to mention that there are so fairly significant leaps to take to get from soreness or tightness in a joint to a non contact injury that happened during a game to improperly reporting an injury on the weekly injury report. It's like listing a thigh contusion on the initial report, practice all week and then during the game suffering a hamstring or groin pull, and having everything be OK because the contusion was listed but had nothing to do with the end result injury. More league bs.

The Dolphins got fined 30k and Adam Gase 15k last year for something similar (although their QB didn’t start and leave halfway through the game).

If it’s a violation, it’s a violation, but they seem to pull the fine amounts out of the air, no?

Belichick games the system by just listing everyone as questionable. That way his next opponent isn't sure who is healthy or not. Also if someone is indeed injured then he is covered because he listed them on the injury report.

I wonder how many consecutive games Brady has started after being listed as questionable at some point earlier in the week.

So even though MR may have inadvertently spilled the beans, does this mean the NFL has a Columbo investigating these matters or did Pete Carroll file a complaint? Guess the Goodell Retirement Fund must be performing badly.

NFL has no problem listing players as questionable if they are healthy?
This isn't rocket science Tomlin & 30 other head coaches.
