Stats just mock the Steelers lol

Unless I'm missing something, Juju has 25 catches thru 6 games. That isn't on pace for 100 receptions for the season.

Smith-Schuster was invisible much of the time before Roethlisberger was hurt, too.

In the pre-season, I said that any drop-off would point to the impact of Brown's absence because you would think Smith-Schuster's targets would go up now that he is by far the team's best receiver. Others were arguing that point, already making excuses for the decline in Smith-Schuster's before the season began. It all comes back to the idea that so much of this board refuses to acknowledge what Antonio Brown used to bring to the Steelers.

 

Smith-Schuster had 166 targets in 2018, the fourth-highest total in the NFL. He was two behind Brown. He is on pace for 96 targets this season. He has 38 right now, tied for 43rd in the league.

The offense is throwing less and running fewer plays per game, but he also has to get open. Game plans and quarterback choices obviously impact targets, but so does the receiver's ability to get open.

No matter how you look at it, Smith-Schuster's numbers are way down.

 

Don't underestimate the loss of Munch. He and the OL were the lynch pin for the offense. Ben needed to be upright to get the ball to AB. And JC needs holes to run through. The line makes both happen. IMO the biggest disappointment this year has been the lackluster OL play. And I'm well aware there have been plenty of disappointments to sift through.

 

So this season when teams beat the Steelers and their backup QBs, it's just sand bagged wins for their opponents .

 

The OL has been good in pass protection though, only giving up 5 sacks I think.

I don't want to diminish your good point. Only allowing 5 sacks is terrific. But as good as that is, it might be a little misleading as teams have stacked the box in run defense. They aren't rushing the passer as much and are daring us to beat them through the air. I could be way off on this, it's just a hunch.

 

I know teams are stacking the box to stop the run, which is why the OL looks bad in the run game.

 

They stacked the box last year as well. JC outdid Juice against a stacked set.

 

I doubt that, last year they had Ben and AB, if they stacked the box Ben would make them pay.

 

5000+ passing yards wasn't making them pay?????? He also led the league in completions (452) and attempts (675).

 

You mean how AB had a "that much of a drop off" without Ben? Forget about AB.

We can't measure Juju's production realistically without adequate QB play. The offense hasn't had adequate QB play this season. It shows in their offensive production and record.

 

Actually those are amazing to me. That shows the future can be bright. Look we've tried the killer B's and been amazing on offense. Where'd that get us? 45-42 against the Jags. RIP my soul. Id rather get back to real Steeler football. I mean were a ways off, but this defense is slowly molding into something great. Watch.

 

There's really only one solution...put Juju at quarterback.

 

The situations are not comparable. You're forgetting just how useless Vick was as a passer by that point. It's not even close to a reasonable comparison.

I know we all want to forget Brown. I'm just not going to delude myself as part of that process. The guy was the best receiver in the league for years. He was still among the top 10 or so last season. Losing that hurts whether you want to admit as much or not.

 

Losing Brown clearly hurt the offense, too. I don't know why THAT is complicated.

It shows that when lesser QB play is added to the equation then stats are likely going to drop for any WR. That's what the Steelers had with Vick and that's what they have right now at the QB position.

Juju could be less productive, as productive, or more productive without Brown if the team had better QB play. We don't know one way or the other because of the situation at QB for this team.

Even Brown's production would suffer with the current group of QBs as it did with Vick. Its Not rocket science dude.
