Has anybody else seen a growing violence in the punch fumble? I have always loved the play where a guy tackling from behind throws the tomahawk chop to knock the ball out but lately guys are simply taking a full body blow in the direction of the ball.

Somebody is going to miss the ball and break a ball carrier's ribs and it opens a loophole for dirty players to throw a punch, for the sole purpose of throwing a punch, and having it be within the rules.

There have been specialists at it over the years - they always mention Charles "Peanut" Tillman from the Bears as prime example (Forced Fumbles: 44). On JuJu TD, Humphrey tried for the punchout and missed the tackle so that is another side of it.

My daughter asked me why they were allowed to punch receivers so hard but other lesser contact was a penalty. I didn't have a good answer.

Punch it, strip it, grab it right from the guy and run the other direction.

It all counts. Punching it is very risky, Very good chance if he's not successful in landing that, JuJu would shrug him off and score a TD to end the game.

I just wonder when the next NFL thug will see this loophole and use it to intentionally break the ribs of a ball carrier? It's coming.

Now that would have been sweet Troy. Much better than "Visions of Sugar Plums". ;)

PS - I assume your namesake will be heading to Canton this next Summer? That will be sooooo special and so very sad at the same time, remembering all the awesome special moments he brought Steeler Nation. The losses of Troy and Big Snack absolutely sunk the Steelers D.

That's how I saw it. If Juju doesn't fumble the punch out he had a lot of room ahead of him. At the very least we would have been in good position for a FG to end the game.

It has sort of become a lost art with the Steelers. They used to be masters of it in the mid 90's.

Chill a little bit....have a Midol. Or maybe you can guarantee us that no player will ever use this to perfect cheap shots? Ask Tomlin the next time you guys are hangin out.

A punch in any of the 3 balls will possibly cause a fumble.

It's a medical fact that a punch to the balls will cause one to drop to the ground and the other to disappear:smiley1:

A midol? Apparently that's exactly what you feel the players should all be taking.

Until you replace humans with robots playing football there will always be the cheapshot factor. Always!

    Mostly unintentional, sometimes intentional

Knee shots while a lineman is already engaged with a defender, Running backs lowering their head becoming just as lethal as the defender lowering their head.

Joe Greene used to punch opponents and didn't hardly get a flag.

Now you want to act like punching at the ball is going to be a mayday because..
some whittle pwayuh might get hit in his whittle wee wibbs?

For god sake... Can football possibly hold onto any violence remaining?

    Please make note...

I'm not celebrating dirty play as I mentioned above. I wabt to make sure the tone of the message wasn't lost as much as the point of it.

    The point being this...

Having been involved in the game a long time punching at the ball is legal and there's a reason for that.

See the ball carrier is moving. He's not stationary saying come up here and punch me. Moreover the puncher is moving at well.

He's not stepping, turning a punch over using power from his hips and shoulder to inflict damage.

If he hits that ball it's a lucky shot. If he misses the ball the damage he's doing to the ribs??? Is NOTHING.

I'm not saying this in a malicious fashion but the original poster really thinks this ciuod be a problem he's never really played tackle football before.

There are far more dangerous things in the game that deserve a penalty but punching at the ball isn't one of them

The Ravens since Harbaugh has taken over mus practice the strip. You see in it in multiple games they get two guys on the ball carrier, one holds him up so he can't get to the ground and the other try to get the ball free. I forget who the veteran wr they signed and no one told him against the Ravens don't try for extra yards, cover the ball and get down. Nope he tried fighting along the sideline for extra yards, one guy held him up the other ripped the ball free.

I imagine a well thought out game plan that has contingencies built in and that it is practiced until it is muscle memory. However I've been told I have an overactive imagination.

Humphrey said the Ravens focus on the ball punch out constantly, they practice it daily and keep a tally. In practice.

Ask MR that question. Or ask any of the myriad of players dropping like flies around the league.

I don't like all the insane meddling with the beautiful game. I pine for real, old school professional football where men were men and whiskey bottles were nervous. But that isn't coming back.

The point of this thread, however, is the possibility of someone using the legal punch of a football to mask a haymaker. I'm not on board with that. You sound like you'd rather be watching The Longest Yard instead of the NFL.

We might be worse at it then.

Tomlin is so lousy that I literally can see him practicing something that is the wrong way to do it.

Worst coach in the NFL since Gruden is gone.

    He's pathetic.

Your imagination is fine. The coach to administer such a dream isn't fine. He's bad. VERY bad.

    Tomlin is embarrassing!!!
