It put the Steelers in the position where any score by them wins, whether or not it was the right decision at the time it was called. The call served its purpose.

Should have never got to OT.

He didn't get lucky. He had confidence in a defense that was playing well. He read the flow of the game and made the right call.

It certainly did not cost them the game. In fact, it worked perfectly by them getting the three and out. Doesn't mean it was a good decision, just that it didn't cost them the game.

BTW, according to that article I linked above it's been 16 times and 8 times the team that kicked it off won, which is basically the same as receiving the ball. That's surprising to me since many of those were in the era when a FG on the opening drive of OT wins the game.

No way they beat the Chargers in their house next week. Only chance is for the other division teams to stack losses.

Tomlin actually made a good point in the press conference just now. Raven's kickoff team was killing us all game.

Still does not make kicking off the right decision.

That’s up for debate. Point of the post is that’s not what cost us the game. It was JuJu’s fumble.

You are right. 2 bad calls kept the Steelers in the game.

It also puts them in a position where if the kick is returned for a touchdown the game is over. Or if Jackson makes a miraculous scramble for a td (very possible) the game is over. A team has more control over the game from the offensive side of the ball. Surrendering that control will always be a questionable call to me.

Tomlin just said in the presser that the reasoning was that the Steelers field position from kickoffs all day was terrible and he didn't want to sign up for that. Mentioned how Tucker would kick it very high to the two and that they had trouble returning it to even the 15. He isn't wrong.

Still not sure I agree with the decision, but I can see the reasoning and it did "work" in that they got the ball with better field position than if they received the kickoff with a chance to win the game.

Seemed like an easy call based on the flow of the game at the time.

Explain how was it dumb? Tomlin obviously trusted his defense and the suckage of Lamar Jackson over his 3rd string QB. The strength of this team is the defense not this offense whom eventually lost the game for them.

Not really, our Danny Smith coached return team would take the ball in the end zone and run a whole 13 yards. Rats kick off returners started running off the filed before the ball landed from the kick. Danny Smith is on the staff--- WHY?

I realize that, but none of that happened. Deferring served its purpose.

I understand all that and I don’t necessarily disagree with the decision but using your crappy STs and it’s coach as a excuse doesn’t sit well with me. Is it too much to ask for improvements on STs returns. We have been subpar for years but the coaching remains the same. Do we have much lower to go if we actually try and spark a change. FDSI....if that’s the excuse you’re gonna use. The standard is the standard....my ass!
