Fichtner has been riding Ben’s coat tail for years now. With Ben out, he can’t game plan himself out of a wet paper bag

If anyone is wondering how you run the ball against a stacked box, the Eagles are putting on a clinic. I hope Fichtner is taking notes.

To be fair, the 49ers didn’t give him a huge amount of time for either.

I’m not saying he would be excellent against another team - I guess we’ll see on Monday - but this is a punishing defense playing a scheme we typically struggle against.

I find this statement from fitchner strange since he calls the plays:

Against the 49ers in Week 3, the second-year quarterback played it relatively safe, and offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner wants that to change against the Bengals on Monday Night Football.

"We had some opportunity. We had some throws for shots," Fichtner told reporters, per Triblive.com's Joe Rutter. "If you don't connect or throw them, it never really materializes."

Thats bs. Our coordinators are terrible, now they are trying to pass the buck on a lousy game plan.

Great way to start off with your new QB, set him up to fail and then put it on him.

Niceee, throwing the young guy under the bus. Too many Ben guys and it starts with the OC. At least if the OC wasn't biased it might trickle down to the players.

    Steelerwire:

Things didn’t go according to plan for the Pittsburgh Steelers in quarterback Mason Rudolph’s first NFL start. What happened? Well to the casual observer it looked like it was a combination of some jitters early by Rudolph coupled with yet another questionable gameplan by offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner.

When Fichtner talked about the offense he didn’t hold back on what he considered missed opportunities by Rudolph.

“We had some opportunities for some throws,” Fichtner said. “If you don’t connect or throw them, it never materializes.”

Fichtner followed the criticisms up with something of a vote of confidence in Rudolph when he said he wasn’t second-guessing him. Honestly, this is just another example of the ineptitude of Fichtner. He’s been handed piles of talent in 2018 and couldn’t win. Does anyone really think he can create a gameplan for the current roster?

You have to wonder how long the Steelers are going to be satisfied with an underperforming offense and make a move.

The game plan was predictable. Anyone who knew anything about Tomlin's steelers knew we would come out with an ultra conservative plan for our 2nd year QB. The niners knew it before the game even started. The comical thing about that plan is it also destroyed any chance of our running game to get going. In our coaches mind I think they were trying to get the Niners to play up closer to the LOS so we could beat them deep. That's been our M.O for years. We love to try and set up the HR rather than sustain drives and look for 1st downs. The plan probably sounded great to Tomlin because he knew it would reduce the chances of Mason turning the ball over. It was an obviously flawed plan because A - it set up our running game to fail. and B - we played the game trying to prevent INT's instead of getting 1st downs. Funny thing is part of the plan worked - they had 5 turnovers . Problem is we could not move the ball at all. Other part of the problem is our defense is a disaster. So like a feed back loop both units set each other up to fail. This thinking has been Tomlin's issue since 2010 and is why we lose to bad teams. Everyone is so quick to point the finger at the coordinators like we don't have a HC who is actually making the decisions and signing off each week on the plan.

ranking around 30th in the league in offensive YPG and Defensive YPG is just flat out a coaching problem. We aint that bad talent wise. We have the players to win.

I actually think Fichtner is right. There were several plays imo that MR didn't pull the trigger quickly enough so he had to check down or run

Hypothetical. Let's assume Rooney is not happy with Fichtner either and wants to bring in someone that is better suited to helping Mason grow. Do you go ahead and do that, banking on Mason being the future or do you pander to Ben who is striving to come back next season?

I'd can Fichtner so fast rather than risk stunting Masons growth and would tell Ben to deal with having a new OC. He's an old old old 38, he'll very likely breakdown part way into next season with either the same injury or a new one.

I was surprised they gave Ben that extension, I always thought he'd play to 38 but not much longer. He fell one season short.

A very good bait, but doesn't compare to the Senko in terms of soft plastics.

We need to see a bit more of Fichtner before cutting bait. I don’t think we have anyone in house that can take the reins of the offense with a few days to prepare. It’s not like the Butler situation where we have a guy who has been there, done that in Austin.

I really disagree on Ben. If you’re not his doctor, you really can’t say whether he’s likely to break down next year, or whether the current injury is likely to recur. If anything, rehabbing may force him to actually throw in the offseason, and he could end up better conditioned for throwing 500+ passes than he has been in years.

I can agree with this, yet let's not forget the kid has player (now) 6 quarters of NFL football. The difference of whether he has any type of NFL career is if he can grow. The play calling itself does not warrant help for growth, open it up. Mistakes will happen, at least we can see how the team responds.

Just basing it on Bens age. His elbow injury appears to be from wear and tear. Maybe it's his knee next or his shoulder, both of which have nagged him for years.

I don't think Ben is going to be able to ward off father time like Brady is doing, two completely different lifestyles.

My son and I talked yesterday about the comments that "plays were called to throw deep but Rudolph couldn't pull it off" and I call that pure BS!

Washington is one of the fastest players in the league and MR could set up in the shotgun and heave it instantly just to keep the defense honest!

I think it was horse**** that Fichtner threw Rudolph under the bus and Rudolph took it like a team player!

That’s not what I was reading into it. If Rudolph keeps checking down to the short safe throw then you will never connect on a deep ball. That was my first thought.

But even if Rudolph was tending to check down you would think a coach, any one of several (head coach, OC, or QB coach), would take him aside and tell him to set up in the shotgun and heave it to Washington or Ju Ju just to keep the D on their toes?
