It is common. What I'm saying is that I don't see a lot of incentive for Vannett to agree to one now with unrestricted free agency 13 games away. Now maybe they have some sort of conditional agreement in place, idk. Something like we'll give you a contract worth X if you get Y number of receptions or something like that. Who knows.

Did Tomlin give any indication of how many, if any, games that McDonald may miss?

I like the guy, and I think the trade is wise....but this isn't like Colbert and I am wondering why the change?

It probably doesn't matter, his first game back he will get injured during pre-game warm-ups.

Wow! I didn’t know that Bell and Brown were part of the Devin Bush trade! Now I’m really ticked off. Have you got room for company on that 2 minute boycott bench?

When the GM himself hypes the trade up by saying this wouldn't have been possible without the AB trade. I don't know what else to tell you. They also gave up a 2020 3rd knowing they will get a comp one for Bell so you can add him to it as well.

So because Ben is out and they're 0-3, they should just tank and be like the Dolphins . The division is still winnable.

Agreed. Just started a thread about this. Fans thinking the season is over is meaningless, Steelers are still trying to win.

Exactly....... we have a 2nd year QB now as our starter for the rest of this season.... the running game is struggling ........

Question: What is Every DC we face here on out thinking??? Hint.... Attack the QB, keep the run shut down and force that Young QB to pass and beat us!!!

If we don’t protect Mason NOW and re-ignite our run game NOW our season is over..... and we ain’t tanking like the fish!!

This isn't a binary choice meaning play to win this season or tank. (BTW, my definition of tanking is intentionally losing.)

There is a whole gradient of options where you make decisions that balance short-term and long-term aims depending on what those aims are for the organization.

If you use the total go for it this year model then the obvious move would be to trade Ben right now for anything that can help the team win this year, but no one is going to advocate that because a) it may hurt you long-term and b) its patently stupid.

So if we all agree that you have to balance short term and long term goals then the question becomes does this trade strike the right balance. In my mind, no. It's a backup rental TE in a year where we probably aren't going anywhere. Even justifying the trade by signing Vannett to an extension doesn't make sense to me, unless you're going to cut McDonald and think he's better than McDonald.

This also answers the stupid gotcha tweet from Fitzer also. Being aggressive when circumstances justify it is one thing, being aggressive when circumstances don't is another. The former is audacious, the latter is reckless.

So Vannett isn't a asset to the team? I'll wait to see how he does.
As far as 'draft capital', it helps your argument but we didn't give them all our picks. Not like we will be unable to move up next year if needed. Now if they gave the hags our 2nd rounder, I would agree with you.

Armchair GM's, critical of everything. I'm glad they (Steelers) are trying to pick themselves up off the floor.

No, stay down! We can have free beer tomorrow! lol

There no way to honestly judge the move until after the season. If he doesn’t play well enough and they don’t re sign him it gonna be a tough pill. My concerns would be...why is Seattle getting rid of him? A quick look at their depth chart at TE shows Dissly and Wilson with two TEs on IR. I don’t know where he was in the pecking order. My other concern is that his scouting report basically says tough with good hands. Not great at blocking, even down blocking which should be the easiest block to make. Good route runner ,goes down easy......

I like the move. If the Steelers are wrong it's not going to dramatically alter their future. They just make the next mistake at te or they don't.

we're going to miss Grimble's one reception for three yards that he had in the first three games.

I think that averages out to about half of our offensive production...

That is not the most glowing of scouting reports. Damning with faint praise is how one would define it.

People are complaining that Vannett only had 29 receptions last year. That makes him Tony Gonzalez compared to Grimble.
