Tomlin has been the head coach of the Steelers since 2007. It's been 12 seasons -- hard to believe that.

I realized that despite being the head coach for over a decade, I still haven't the foggiest clue about the identity of a Tomlin coached Steelers team. In the early years he won with Cowher's players. I think we knew what type of identity Cowher's Steelers had -- tough, gritty, pound the rock, make big plays in the passing game when it mattered.

But in the years that followed Tomlin was able to build the roster his way, with players he liked and installed the schemes he preferred. Over the past 5 years the identity was forged based on the Killer B's. His elite playmakers often bailed out the team when it underperformed. Now that the Killer B's are gone it seems the emperor wears no clothes.

This Tomlin team sorely lacks an identity. Are we a running team? No. Are we a passing team? No. Do we have a tough, physical defense? No. Do we employ creative plays to put our players in advantageous positions? No. Do we adjust our gameplan to exploit our opponent's weaknesses and cover our own? No. Do we know what type of player we should target in the draft/FA to fit our schemes? No.

A decade later it seems Tomlin knows less about what his team should be than when he started.

For too many years Tomlin let others dictate the identity of his team. Those people have left now and now he has no clue who he is.

Sloppy, lazy, unprepared, and undisciplined, low football IQ pretty much sums it up.

Jack of all trades, master at none.

That seems to be the MO of our defence anyway. We draft these project players that can't seem to do anything really well and we hope they can do everything. We then trade for a great FS and we blitz with him and put him in the box. Whatever the identity the coaches want, it's not working. They're asking the players to do things they aren't good at and/or don't want to do.

Before this season it was a super talented offense that could make up for poor coaching and unprepared players on defense. That really shined through when the O would have bad games (more specifically if Ben would play worse than his norm.) A team that has underachieved for what feels like a decade now.

    This season? An absolute trainwreck
