haunting how we could have arguably the greatest moment in Pittsburgh sports history and 8 days later have the absolute worst memory with Roberto's death.

My son and I were checking this out. We fully expected The Immaculate Reception to be number 1. I think Harrison's 100 yard touchdown was around number 11.

I thought the TD pass to Santonio in the same game was a better play. It was epic. With everything on the line, in the last minute of the SB.

It was #7, Ben to Holmes Super Bowl game winner was #6. Steelers had 3 plays in the top 10 all-time!

As it should be. The Immaculate Reception could also be argued as the greatest play in sports history. Before that, the Steelers were... well... not good at all. Since then, how many losing decades have the Steelers have had?!

    Zero.

The current decade not so great either. Since we choked in the SB against GB, only 3-5 in postseason the last 9 seasons. 2 of the last 9 seasons missed playoffs all together. Now we are in last place and going for 2 years in a row of the steelers watching playoffs from the couch. This is a key reason why Tomlin should be canned.

As long is TOMLIN is fired after the season I will chalk up this lost season as a win. It’s almost like a necessary evil.

The 1980s Steelers posted a a winning percentage of .507 as the overall record at the time was 77-75. That is still above .500 last time I checked. Yes, that period was bad but without Coach Noll, it would have been much worse.

Again, the Steelers have had more success since the Immaculate Reception than any other team. This is not opinion. This is fact.

We actually only had 3 losing seasons in the 80s - 85, 86 and 88.

The rest of the AFC Central just did better than us most of the time, so it rarely got us in the play offs.

Too funny. Being a hair above .500 is not success for a 10 year period for this franchise. Maybe for the clowns or lions but that is unacceptable and underachieving in Pittsburgh, which is where we have been too much over the past 10 years with Tomlin. Time for MT to get to steppin.

I never said slightly above .500 is something to be proud about either. For that matter, that is the focus here. Pittsburgh's sustained success is.

That is still an indicator that the Steelers have never finished below .500 in any decade. That is still impressive given the collaspe of the dynasty of the 70s. No other team can say that.

For that matter, New England themselves finished below .500 in both the 70s, a record consisting of 66-78 and in the 90s with a record of 68-92. Their only winning record decade wise between the merger and before the 00s were the 80s with a record of 78-74; a .513 winning percentage.

Sure, slightly over .500 is not ideal at all. That all said, it still constitutes as a winning record. Again, very impressive if you ask me.

Pick a position and stick with it. You just said that you didn't say being slightly above .500 is something to be proud of. By that, I infer that you are not proud of it. Then, four sentences later, you say it is impressive.

Yes they had a winning decade by less than seven tenths of one percent. So if you want to pedantically argue that as being impressive, then by all means, have at it. I consider that to be substandard and NOT successful. Losing half your games and missing the postseason is not successful. However, you want to spin that mediocrity is meaningless.

Fair enough on this. I did not catch that part. That being said, there is one major difference here on what we are discussing.

We are talking about through the decades. Being above .500 for that level of time is not an easy feat. As I have already stated, no other franchise can say so.

I really think this is a meaningless argument because success is subjective. But I'm not following your logic or maybe I'm missing your point. The steelers have the 10th best winning percentage all time in regular season and 5th best postseason. I'm seeing 18 teams in the league with all time regular season win percentage above .500. What am I missing here?

OK. Well, thanks for posting. I guess I'll just say that I disagree with the premise and the logic of how the author chose to represent the numbers. We can all dig up numbers and stats to make whatever argument we want. At the end of the day, and this is just my opinion, the number that matters the most is championships and that should be the ultimate goal of every team. The 80s and the current decade have been pretty damn dismal if you ask me.
