Steelers Broncos 1979 Monday Night Football

Found this on the tube. Brings back a lot of memories.

For those that were not around then, this is what Monday Night Football was like back in its heyday. Steelers heading towards another SB.

That is when I was young enough to stay up for the games.

 

What stood out to me after watching:

Howard Cosell was an artist

Bradshaw could throw it on a rope

All the white guys on the field

D. Shell should be a HOFer.

Interesting notes: Bradshaw is never in the shotgun. On passing plays there are two running backs in the backfield. 3rd and 1, they run the ball. I'm not saying having two backs on passing downs, but you could see the greatness of Noll with football fundamentals.

It is cool watching a game and seeing all the hall of famers.

 

I was 11 in 1979 so I usually wasn't allowed to stay up late enough to watch the games but I did have a transistor radio so I could surreptitiously listen on the AM. Just seeing the old 70's stuff reminds me of Buck and Stramm.

 

I stumbled upon this game last year and watched it. It's a great watch. I love watching old games. I wish the NFL would put out a channel that just showed old games.

 

I was there. Mac and a few others probably as well.

 

I believe the Steelers didn’t implement the shotgun formation until 1984 - could be wrong on the specific year, but it was mid-80s I’m sure.

 

About that time I noticed most OL were white. I have a theory as to why, but someone might turn it into a racism thing and that’s not in the least where I’m going.

 

This is kind of stupid but hey, I am know for seeing stupid stuff. If you watch the video again, just a little, check out the bench the players are sitting on. Man, nothing remotely like today with the heaters and coolers not to mention backs on the bench. Just a plain old wood bench and this is 1979 not like the 40's.

No wonder you see Lambert sitting on his helmet sometimes. For sure though, the game has changed quite a bit. Some of those hits would not only get a penalty today but also a fine too.

I do agree that the Missile, Donnie Shell gets no respect outside of Pittsburgh. He was really feared as a hitter back then and he showed it in this game.

But that is when Monday Night Football was an event. ESPN was just starting and there were only like 2 games on TV on Sunday. So, the highlights at halftime were always good too.

As a kid, after the halftime highlights, my mom would tell me to go take a bath and I could stay up and watch the third quarter. That meant I was taking a dry bath. I would turn on the water, splash it around, change into my pajamas, and be out in 2 minutes. I do remember having to do a replay on occasion, upon further review. I later learned to get my arms and neck wet and not dry off very well.

 

Which explains why you smell kinda funny

 

Ben is in the shotgun over 90% of the time ...even when inside the 2 yard line in the redzone ...sometimes with an empty backfield

 

Kind of an issue they aren't playing sound ball quite a bit around here for awhile
