Dobbs Traded

They reached for Dobbs by drafting him at all. That said, his style doesn't fit in with the steelers offense. He was a dual threat college QB who isn't a real accurate passer. They must have taken him as a project thinking he had potential to be a solid pocket passer. Easy for us to second guess now I suppose. We watched him play every game at UT and I always felt like he played up to his potential in college and was already at his ceiling. He seems like a really great kid and is super smart, but expecting him to be a starting caliber NFL QB is not realistic IMO.

 

Dobbs does have a golden opportunity. Minshew played well yesterday but he was a 6th round pick for a reason. Below average size and arm talent. Jaguars didn't just throw a 5th round pick at the Steelers with the idea Dobbs will be their 3rd string QB when Foles returns. They obviously don't trust Minshew to keep them afloat for the next 8 weeks while Foles is out. I'm guessing they'll groom Dobbs to become the starter in a week or two if Minshew looks bad the next game.

The Jags are a very talented team. They have a good receiving corp. Good running back. Good o-line. Great defense. All the pieces are in place for Dobbs to succeed. He has a chance to make a name for himself. Couldn't really ask for a better opportunity.

 

And our 4th rounder this year was Snell. Who was the rave until he started to carry the ball. Draft picks are like shooting craps, they felt comfortable taking Dobbs, was not in our best interest to keep him and got a 5th (which is far better that most thought we would get).

 

I've explained this many times. It's not my fault you can't see it. Jones was the better option for 2018. Dobbs was the one who had at least some upside. If you are a Super Bowl contender, as the Steelers thought they were in 2018, you should be keeping the guy who helps you that season. They didn't and it cost them against Oakland. They are lucky it didn't cost them more often.

Simply put, Jones would have been more valuable to the Steelers in 2018, but Dobbs had more value beyond that season. I wrote as much at the time. Today's trade does nothing to counter what I've been saying all along. Did you not realize that or were you so hungry for a gotcha moment that you decided to ignore my actual point and make up your own?

 

I didn't disagree with trading Dobbs. He just didn't have enough trade value until the Jaguars became desperate after losing Foles.

 

John DeFillipo runs quite a bit of RPO's. Keep in mind he comes from the Andy Reid tree. Joshua Dobbs is best suited to an offense that relies heavily on RPO's. That was his calling card at the University of Tennessee.


Not saying he is going to explode onto the national scene but given his play style, I think Joshua can have better success in Jacksonville than in Pittsburgh. Their offense is better suited towards his strengths than his weaknesses. Mason's strengths clearly fit this team whereas Joshua's sadly did not.


This actually raises a good question; I understand Pittsburgh needed a Quarterback within that time frame from 2015-2018. However, why draft Dobbs if he did not fit the scheme?! For that matter, why was the interest there in the first place?!



Not stating I am ungreatful for his contributions (albeit limited) but seems a bit unusual.

 

Use the roster spot for a receiver who can get open AND catch the ball.

 

Just a guess here, but maybe Tomlin has a preference for mobile QBs. In his 2nd year he drafted Dennis Dixon and later on brought in his idol Michael Michael Vick y'all.

Then he drafted Dobbs. When the Haley hate was going on with Big Ben and he repeatedly brought up retirement, KC and MT admitted they were scouting QBs to get a feel for what traits to look for. I think MT wanted one more shot at a mobile type guy, then KC saw too much value in Rudolph to pass him up.

 

Maybe the issue was that things changed since he was drafted.

Perhaps they hoped he could develop into a better pocket passer and they don't like what they saw in two-plus seasons?

The other factor is Mason Rudolph. They couldn't know they would get him in the third round the following season when they drafted Dobbs. Being able to take Rudolph and seeing his development by the start of his second season also helped make Dobbs expendable.

Your second point is probably the answer. Its hard to develop two young QBs at the same time. Steelers clearly liked Rudolph more than Dobbs. And once Rudolph proved himself capable they traded Dobbs. There just weren't enough practice snaps for both.

Maybe it is a combination of both. They could be both disappointed in what they've seen since they drafted Dobbs and things changed because Rudolph fell to him in the third round. If you believe what the Steelers said about Rudolph when they took him, they had him rated as a first-rounder and simply couldn't pass him up in the third. If that's true, then maybe the plan was to develop Dobbs for the future, but Rudolph simply took that spot from him.
