Dobbs showed enough growth to bounce Landry... I LOVED IT!

Mason has unquestionably shown more than enough to dethrone Dobbs as the 2... I Love rudolphs second year leap in order to do so... A leap I actually expected of Landry in the early days of his career. I want who ever gives us the best shot should their number get called. From what I've seen, Dobbs has shown goose egg in growth after running a half ass decent backup QB out of town in his second year. I'd argue to say he's regressed from last year to this year and while I don't believe most teams game plan in PS they obviously know how to play a 1 read mobile QB with shaky inaccuracy. Most teams have seen it and Dobbs has not elevated said stature on what he is. Maybe he fits better on a team with a different approach but his gimmick don't work here... The team is not built to accommodate it.

Question here is, has Dobbs warranted another spot over the new kid who fits the mold of how things/schemes are ran around here?

I personally don't think so. I'm not crowning mason or hodges anything in the neighborhood of successor to Ben's retirement, but they seem to have a grasp of how the current system is designed and they fit into it.
Been rooting for Dobbs since he showed up just the same as I rooted for Landry but when the proof is there, the reasoning of keeping em on board is not. Been there done that next man up might offer something else more pliable OR not... But when we know it don't/won't work here so why keep trying?

I can see them keeping Dobbs as the #3 and putting Hodges on the practice squad. Dobbs trade value is slim but their might be a team with a running QB scheme that might take a look see.

I know this is blasphemy around here, but if Roethlisberger has to miss a few games... and history has shown that he does from time to time, the Steelers will WIN with Mason Rudolph at QB. Disclaimer: *if the D doesn't crap the bed and give up 3rd and 25+*

I'm gonna say it now.... Rudolph is to Ben as Young was to Montana... and Rodgers was to Favre.

    Rudolph is the real deal.

Oh yeah... and the Steelers are still going 7-9.

    Rudolph the backup qb

    Had a very shiny flow

And if you ever saw him

You would also like his throws

    All of the other qbs

Used to laugh and call him lame

    They never let poor rudolph

    Play in any Steelers games

Then one foggy season night mt came to say

Rudolph with your spiral so tight

Won't you guide our team tonight

Now all the fans they love him

As they shouted out with glee

    Mason the backup qb

    You'll be better than bubby.

Both Young & Rodgers were 1st round talents. I think Ben sticks around long enough that his replacement is still in college.

Edit: you might be the defending picks champ but when on top everyone is coming for you. Steelers win at the least 10 games this season.

I have no idea how much a rocket scientist makes in a year but I bet it is a lot. If Dobbs starts now he could work at that for the next 40 years. His NFL career if it isn't over now will surely be over soon. If I were him I would get on with my life's work.

For once in a very long time I feel comfortable with a our #2 QB which obviously is Rudolph. He looked natural out there. I feel he will be the successor to Ben and they should really look no further than he being that replacement. If Ben were to go down or perform very poorly I have complete faith that Mason can win in this league and probably for years to come.

Dobbs could not make that leap this year. He is very athletic but for some reason couldn't move this offense. The system didn't fit him. His style has been passed through the NFL and it didn't make it. This is why there is such a big leap from college to the NFL. He may find a back up job somewhere else but it will never amount to a starting role anywhere. Back up role will always be his ceiling. He has a good head on his shoulders and a demanding degree in Aerospace Engineering. He will be successful outside the NFL.

Hodges will make the cut but I have little confidence in him elevating his level to that of a starter. He will merely just be a back up in this league for years to come. Nothing really stood out to me that has him taking that leap.

Maybe I am totally wrong and will be surprised but I fully expect Dobbs to be the #3 and Hodges to get cut.

Although, I don't agree, I can also see that happening.

If it does then it will be lights out on here for a while.

I have been on the Hodges bandwagon for a while now and would be elated but shocked if he made the team over Dobbs. It's just not how the Steelers operate. They made a 4th round investment in Dobbs and they are not going to throw him to the curb in favor of an undrafted free agent. Even though the 4th string camp arm clearly outplayed him.

I do not see Hodges going anywhere but home.

Dobbs played horrible this preseason, but I think he understands our offense better.

I do not see any upside to Hodges being on the PS.

Of course Ben is steps above Rudolph. He's going into his 15 season in the NFL and Rudolph is certainly green behind the ears comparatively. I do see potential for Mason to succeed Ben eventually and I haven't had that feeling yet with any other QB since Ben was drafted.

Neither Dobbs nor Hodges should be mentioned in the same sentence with Roethlisberger. Just the way I see it.

I would expect Ben to be better then Mason for the moment but I as well see Rudolph being Bens successor. He could still be in college but I doubt it. I see Rudolph developing nicely under Ben.

I had hopes, but I could see both Dobbs and Hodges getting pink slips and the Steelers picking a QB off the trash heap on Saturday for the PS. Both were horrible this last game which probably reflects as poorly on them as it does the 3rd+ string OL who will also all be shown the door in 48 hours.

They should've given Hodges more opportunities whenever we had NFL-quality football players on the field. You can throw Big Ben or Tom Brady or Joe Montana in playing with scrubs & they would look just as bad. I was very impressed with Hodges for making the best of what they'd given him ...he didn't get a fair shake but I think we're gonna stick with Dobbs as the #3..

There are only so may snaps. Hodges got the expected snaps and I doubt expected much from what the O line gave him. A player may seal a spot on the team with an elevated performance in the last preseason, but most of the 53 has already been penciled in. I do believe a player might play himself out of a job as well, Dobbs did himself no favors last night.

“If Roethlisberger gets injured, and Dobbs needs to play, our offense will fizzle and sputter.” There, that wasn’t so hard!

I actually feel the opposite. Hodges holding the clipboard would allow him to gain valuable experience going into next year. Keeping Hobbs really has no upside, if Ben were to go down with an extended injury Hobbs would likely be available to resign, if not you really do not lost that much.
