Bellidouche won with Cassel. Andy Reid won with Alex Smith.. Bill O'Brien made the playoffs with Brian Hoyer.. It can be done

Art II: Mike, we're so disapointed in your recent performance that you're only getting a one year $10M extension. I hope this lesson helps focus your attention on this season.

Mike, grinning to self: Thanks for your patience, boss. I accept your harsh discipline and take it to heart.

To help him get the Clemson QB adjusted to life without Ben.

Just the fact that this makes some people upset makes me wish it was a 10 year extension.

I like Tomlin, I don't want to see him go. I think it is odd if he was tied to Ben and his timeline. Once Tomlin goes I don't think it will be like the transition after Cowher ... I would expect the entire staff gets cleared out, and I think that might be dangerous.

All I’ll say is be careful what you wish for. We have had hiccups, some that made me want Tomlin gone before I simmered down, but we’ve been knocking on the door pretty consistently. A new head coach, and especially a whole new coaching staff, could easily take things in the wrong direction. If you look league wide, that’s what happens more often than the new coach turning things around.

Rams seemed to improve with McVay after Fisher. Likewise with Eagles and Pederson after Kelly.

Steelers could do better at HC, IMO. Complacency has wasted years of a franchise QB.

How did the Eagles do when they let Reid go for Kelly? It took them two tries to get it right. I didn’t say it never goes well, just that it usually doesn’t. Look back at coaching replacements for successful coaches who are let go, and you’ll see how often it doesn’t improve the teams’ records.

Also, the Rams had no way to go but up. It’s not really the same situation.

    Really?!

Care to name some candidates?! For that matter, have any ideas if said candidate is being hired in house or outsourced?!

Not really good comparisons with the Eagles or Rams, Tomlin has had the luxury of having a SB winning Franchise QB in place for his entire tenure..... not many other coaches get that luxury.

Well... for all of his faults, Cowher improved over his tenure. Can you say that about Tomlin? The defense is not nearly as good as it was 10 years ago... and not even close. I give Tomlin props for the offense in this decade... it's been "above the line"... but how many playoff wins has it achieved since SBXLV? Steelers won a lot more playoff games with a top 5 D... and average offense.

What is more intriguing is that Tomlin got extended but Kevin Colbert did not. That interests me personally. Perhaps both Colbert and the Steelers want to take this year to year?!

Or is someone like David Tepper, a minority owner, zeroing in?! Time will tell. Still interesting no less.

Colbert's fate rests with the performance of Edmunds and Bush, IMO. There's been too many 1st round whiffs since 2013.

I dunno. Cowher had ups and downs rather than a straight trajectory.

Yes, but Cowher built a legendary team from 1998-2006... through draft and free agency (Farrior). '98, '99 and '03 were down years, but the core was being created for Super Bowls XL and XLIII.

And none of those QBs were good enough to win a Super Bowl. If you want to win consistently, you need a good QB.

Yeah because Cowher put those teams together by himself , he did have two good GM's.

Cowher improved over his tenure?! Intriguing. Let me ask these questions then.

Does going to the playoffs in 2002 to a 6-10 record the year after sound like improvement to you?!

Drafting in the Top 10 in 2000?!

How about nearly missing out on Ben in 2004 to draft a guard?!

Mike Tomlin still has yet to post a losing record. For that matter, guess who is second to Bill Belichick?! I will wait.

They went with a 1 year extension because the Front Office was concerned about the likely push back for excessive use of paper from Environmentalists if they had gone with the month to month option. :hmm:
