David Johnson is like a case of athletes foot that just won't go away. At least Washington is learning a bit from Gay about how DB's approach defending wide receivers.

Johnson was a key contributor in the Super Bowl loss to the Packers as he totally whiffed on a block on Clay Mathews, who then blew up Mendenhall causing him to fumble.

Willie Gay I can live with, but David Johnson was straight garbage. Maybe he ends up being a good coach though.

People repeat that just being a good player doesn’t mean you will be a good coach. I’m having less faith a poor player is going to be a good coach. :hmmm:

I really like Gay as a coach. This is purely speculation, but I think Gay will do quite well. I've noticed that the guys who have just natural raw ability don't seem to make great coaches. Guys that had to fight and scratch to hone their craft know all the tricks, and may end up being better coaches because of it. Gay was constantly learning as a player, and I think it was easy to see the improvement in his game over the years.

Wasn't Tony Dungy an average NFL player for the Steelers? He ended up being a pretty good coach.

I am with you on this. Gay's first time here he stunk I couldn't stand him, if I recall it was Gay who AP made poster board material when he truck sticked him right? After he came back from the Cards he was a different player and some will say was our best CB at one point. This is something I think will make him a good if not a very good coach, jmo.

Maybe I'm getting senile but I have a different recollection of Gay's 1st time in Pgh. I recall him playing pretty good at first in the slot. It wasn't till they moved him outside that he stunk up the joint.

Kubiak and Harbaugh were fairly bland players as well.

In fact, I’m struggling to think of a good coach who was also a great player. Mike Singletary didn’t do too well. I guess Munchak could be one.

Gay had a great football career. Do you know how good you have to be to play in the league for that long? And he wasn't a super athlete,he did very well for what he had.

I think he could be a good coach. David Johnson,I don't know what that's about.

    Tony Dungy says hello.

Edit : Heinz beat me to it

How good was Tom Landry as a player? He played before my time.

I didn’t even realize Landry ever played, but he did make one pro bowl.

But I’m not sure what your point is?

Or are we discussing 6th round quarterbacks becoming super bowl mvp again?

Yep. Good point. Chuck Noll was a messenger guard in Cleveland and he turned out OK.

I hope Gay is not limited to just mentoring the WRs. He need to mentor our CBs too ...like what to look for in certain situations so that they can jump a few routes to get picks...

Gay has been brought in to finesse the defense’s celebrations, I hear.

Not so good players becoming great coaches was what I was referring to.
