Freaking love this pick also. This kid plays fierce. 6th round? From what I see right now this has been a great draft.

I also really like his motor. He plays the game all out. I think the odds of him being a long term fixture on special teams is very good. I also think that he can develop into a true off-the-ball LB. However, I’d be very pleasantly surprised if he develops into an NFL edge rusher. In my observation of complete games (not just highlights), he needs to win right away on the snap to be effective as a pass rusher. If the blocker is able to establish position and proper hand placement in the first 1/2 second, Sutton gets engulfed and is easily managed. NFL tackles are much better than what he faced in college, and he may be easily controlled by them. The same for run defense. If he is able to penetrate immediately at the snap, he can disrupt running plays. However, he’s probably not going to able to set the edge vs. NFL tackles. He plays the run on the way to the QB, which means that he’s limited in terms of how he can be used in run defense. Teams that run right at him will blow him right off the ball all day.

I’m not trying to bash the guy. I really like him, and he was on my list as a guy I wanted in the late rounds. However, I wanted him as a guy to groom for the Buck ILB position. I think he has the athleticism, fire and instincts to become a legit starter in that role in 1-2 years. I just don’t see a guy who is going to have what it takes physically to be an NFL edge guy. Since it sounds like that’s the plan, I hope I’m wrong.

If you are going to draft a guy from the smaller schools, then he should be one of the dominant players there. This seems to be the case with Smith.
I don't see him as a full time edge guy either and thought he'd do well with a move inside. And really why not just make him a pass
    rush specialist moving him around.
They have been trying some of these smaller, faster OLBs for awhile now. Travis Feeney 6'4" 226, Keion Adams 6'2" 245 and now Smith 6' 233. Why keep investing in the picks unless they view them as STers only, which I don't think is the case. I don't know what the plan is though. I think they are just trying to find that one specialist so we'll see who b/t Adams and Smith makes the most noise.

Problem is.....when have they ever used a pass rush specialist? Watt and Dupree will get all the snaps until they get tired, then Chickillo will spell them. Harrison couldn't get snaps over Dupree as a PR specialist when he was clearly the better pass rusher. Ola barely got any snaps at all and Adams hasn't gotten any either. Butler is on record of saying they will be using only 3 OLBs like last year. If true or even if they keep 4(Ola) where does that leave any of the others? I have a hard time seeing Sutton come in and adjusting enough to NFL Tackles to warrant a opportunity over Ola or Adams. He will either have to light it up on STs or hope they group him in with the ILBs. Most likely both.

I don't see why they wouldn't try him at both positions and see what sticks. I too see him inside and think he could be rather good.

Well Feeney was poached off the PS and Keion was injured his whole rookie year so the team never got a full chance to work with either to try and develop them as a PR specialist. Adams was available all last year and I thought reports were good. But maybe they haven't developed the way they wanted. Ola was on IR most of last year too. I think Smith may be another chance at the plate. Like many have said I hope they try him at both in and outside. Denver said they want to try Justin Hollins at inside and he's 6'5" 250. So teams may be experimenting with non-typical players. I don't think Smith comes in year one and gets himself into the rotation but maybe in 2-3 years while Chick's contract runs out.

As for only having 3 OLBs on the 53, I don't know their reasoning for that. It luckily worked last year, but that's a russian roulette dance if you ask me. You can only have so many players on the inactive roster and then you risk a guy on PS. And as soon as a guy is poached, a guy on the 53 gets injured according to Murphy's Law :lolol:

I think we go with 4 OLBs this year and a hybrid ILB/OLB which could be Ola or Smith.

With Bush and Barron on the inside I don't think we will keep an extra guy on the inside.

The makeup of the roster is definitely evolving away from the traditional 3-4. The 3-4 may be the new subpackage lol

This. Harrison killed KC’s late comeback bid in a game a few years ago, and then rode the pine when he was clearly the better closer the rest of the season.

I said it then and will say it now, Harrison play time at the end was really bad as he was clearly a better pass rusher and better against the run then Dupree. It had to be something brewing with MT and Porter that limited his playing time.

Agree, everyone was hoping JH92 would play more. I think they just wanted to cling to their #1 pick in Dupree

I’m still not sure why Harrison didn’t get more snaps. Maybe by that point JH was pulling his antics in the locker room?

It really was a shame the way the whole James Harrison fiasco ended. I too, wished for a better outcome. Sadly, what truly happened is something we will never know.

Only major aspect of that incident moving forward I could think of would be better off if certain aspects were not shared at all. Who knows how that could resonate now with the current locker room.

I've been a huge deebo fan for years....... That said he was a liability when dropping in coverage. He became a one trick pony rushing the QB and his stamina was clearly not what it used to be.
If he was what So many are claiming he would have played more or would've been signed by another team.

At that point he wasn’t a complete player, but he had better pass rushing ability than Dupree. The evidence is right there in that Chiefs game that he closed out by owning Eric Fisher. I don’t think anyone here is suggesting that he should have started over Dupree. He was more like a baseball closer that comes in to pitch the 9th inning in a tight game.

I agree his shot at edge rusher is a loooong one, but his motor and attitude make him an ideal special teams candidate. The typical knock on him is size. Accoding to the NFL Combine Smith is 6' and 233 and Devin Bush is 5' 11" and 234. Bush is faster and much more athletic. Smith is stronger - 25 vs. 21 bench presses. I wonder if his frame could handle 10-15 more pounds of muscle. Harrison was 6' 245 albeit with mutant like muscle fiber for ludicrous strength.

Deebo should not have been an all down linebacker. He would've been a great closer in the 4th when we have the lead and you know the other team is just going to throw. He excels at that.

Agreed. He did almost nothing with a lot more snaps he was getting per game with NE than he ever would have gotten here.

And they were moving him all around purely looking for mismatches. Steelers never would have used him like that and wasn’t helpful anyway.

so what you are saying is he was over the hill..

you think 2008 James Harrison would've done something in NE? lol
