I've said elsewhere that maybe it's just sticker shock because it's not something the Steelers do. I'm not sure they have ever traded up into the top 10. The last time they traded up in the first round at all was to get Polamalu and that was at 16.

Your post seemed to be dismissing the value of what they gave up. That was a high price and I'm still not sure they are better off with Bush than they would have been with Murphy, a good player in the second round and whatever player they might have taken instead of Layne in the third because I doubt they take another corner if they had grabbed one in the first.

Teams tend to be willing to pay more for a quarterback.

I don't see it that way. A high price to me would be giving up a 1st rd pick. Those are gold. Having two 3rd rd picks with one of them at the top of the rd softened the blow of not having a 2nd. I think Colbert did great negotiating that price but will really depend on how Bush pans out. If he's a bust, obviously a steep price but if he's the player they are hoping for, it's a steal seeing as how they kept next years first rounder.

I think a first rounder is usually the going rate to move up that far. I thought for sure thats what they gave up and even commented in the draft thread about feeling sick over that.

I was very relieved when I learned the details of the trade.

It's not a steal. That is some serious hyperbole. It's a good trade if he pans out, but it's not a steal.

It wasn't just a second pick. It was the 20th pick overall, the two and a third-rounder next year.

I'm talking about in comparison to a number one pick which it could have very well cost them.

I know what else they gave up, no ****.

I know Bush isn't the next Shazier, but he should be better than anybody else they tried at the position since Shazier got injured.

Some fans are complaining about this draft class, the talking heads who cover the draft sure like what the Steelers did. Louis Riddick of ESPN said the Steelers got the best player in the draft in Bush, Riddick also said Diontae Johnson was the best route runner in the draft. Mel Kiper had Justin Layne as the draft's biggest steal in the third round.

Then frame it properly, which you did not in that earlier post.

Good draft for a change. The cleansing has now taken full effect. Moving up 10 spots was brilliant.

Why would you feel comfortable with Johnson and not Layne? Layne was probably the best value in their draft. The kid has some developing to do, but he was already pretty good against high-level competition at Michigan State.

Your right.. Each of them had 1 INT in college. Shazier had 15 sacks to Bush 10 . He is not Shazier but he will indeed improve this defense

It’s definitely needed since I already disclosed to you what the Steelers gave up earlier.

Or you knew and were just being intellectually dishonest??

    Don’t be a hypocrite.

The trade wasn't a steal by a long shot. I would characterize it as a fair draft day deal.

If you use the draft pick value chart as a guide, the 10th pick in the draft is worth 1300 pts. The 20th is worth 850 pts. The 52nd is 380 pts. If the Steelers win the SB next season and draft 32nd in the third round that pick is worth 116 pts. So even in the best case scenario they give up 1346 pts for 1300 in return. So about the same. If they end up making the playoffs but have an early exit so let's say picking 24th in the third that's 1380 value pts they gave up to get 1300 in return. To put that in perspective 80 pts is equivalent to the fifth pick in the fourth round, so the difference is not trivial. As a comparator, the Packers moved up 9 spots to the 21st pick and gave up the 30th, 114th, and 118th. GB moved into the 800 pt spot and gave up a cumulative 744 pts.

Based strictly on the value chart and compared to the Packers the Steelers "overpaid", but that happens on draft day when you're looking at a top half of the first round pick. If Bush pans out it's a great deal, if not its a lousy deal. Regardless though, it's certainly not a steal for the Steelers. It was a fair price to get the player you wanted in that spot.
