So which of these seven draft picks will be the 2.5 useful picks that Colbert averages? Starter? Backup? Special teams? Good contributor for at least 3 years?

Bush - Long term starter and pro bowler
DJ - Will take a couple years but will eventually be a solid starter with pro bowl potential
Layne- Will be a contributor here
Snell - a beast that will get carries this year

In 5 years you will not remember who the rest were until you read through past drafts online.

Bush is the only one that does anything for me.. Sounds like Layne could be good and Snell had a nice college career but other than that its a pretty blah draft to me

Whatever the success rate is, it's been better than most teams. Pro bowlers don't equate to championships. Look at the Patriots, they win because of their schemes and play calling. Every player is on the same page. It's disgusting to watch lol.

Bush (A-) - starter. Hopefully a pro bowler.

Johnson (B-) - slot receiver and starter by year 2. Future upside.

Layne (B+) - contributor in year 1. Bit if a boom or bust.

Snell (B) - will be a contributor in year 1. I don't think he takes Conner's job as the #1 though.

Gentry (D) - may make the team based solely on position scarcity. Not much long term potential.

Smith (B+) - can make team on ST. Future upside.

Buggs (B) - Probable PS, however, could be a spot with him.

    Gilbert (C) - likely PS

Gray (C) - PS at best

    Overall - (B-)

I definitely think you will see some contributors.some due to position scarcity.

I think Bush will be a great player but should we have traded up for it? We will count his pro bowls.

Johnson could be a major home run. Time will tell. And maybe he was about to be taken. But as is right now, was still a bit of a reach. I hope I am very wrong and he turns into a star.

Layne was a great value pick at a position of need.

We needed a RB and the Steelers seem to love him. I like everything he did at Kentucky but his speed does worry me.

Gentry was a bomb of a pick. Could make the squad this year but not about future. TE will still be a need in 2020.

I live the Sutton Smith pick. I think he has a NFL future.

Buggs could replace LT Walton on the team or could go to PS.

Gilbert has tools to work with. Good athlete. Likely PS.

Gray is developmental. PS at best.

We can speculate but in all honesty who knows? The first four picks should all contribute over time but I don’t know much about the later picks.

The Steelers draft well considering they are drafting most years somewhere between 20-32. If you compare the records of all teams in the NFL I would imagine that the Steelers would come out very well in terms of players that stick and make the roster long term.

I could see both Smith and Gilbert having a shot purely based on STs.

I will have a thread tomorrow on my final thoughts. Finalizing my grades for each pick currently. I can give the short order though!

    Devin Bush Jr. Rookie Impact:

    • Floor: Starter with impact plays and possible DROY candidate.
    • Ceiling: DROY. Possbile Pro Bowl invite.

    Dionate Johnson Rookie Impact:

    • Floor: 3rd Wideout with Z Receiving potential. Special Teams contributor
    • Ceiling: Interchangeable wideout with game breaking abilities. Special Teams star.

    Justin Layne Rookie Impact:

    • Floor: 4th Corner in the Dime Package. Might become slot corner depending on Mike Hilton's performance.
    • Ceiling: 3rd Corner who mainly plays in slot. Will supplant either Nelson/Haden in case of injury. Solid starter.

    Benny Snell Rookie Impact:

    • Floor: Third down/Goal Line Back. Behind Samuels and Conner. Situational.
    • Ceiling. Primary backup behind Conner in case of injury. Ball Control Running Back who wears defenses down. Rotational to Starter capable.

    Zach Gentry Rookie Impact:

    • Floor: Developmental depth.
    • Ceiling: Supplants Xaiver Grimble by midseason to become a reliable target. Big Red Zone potential.

    Sutton Smith Rookie Impact:

    • Floor: Special Teams ace. Developmental depth.
    • Ceiling: Primary situational option. Supplants Olasunkanmi Adenyi.

    Isaiah Buggs Rookie Impact:

    • Floor: Developmental player with situational upside.
    • Ceiling: Depth based situational player. Alualu backup.

    Ulysses Gilbert III Rookie Impact:

    • Floor: Practice Squad developmental player.
    • Ceiling: Special Teams ace. Supplants Tyler Matakevich. Depth.

    Darwin Gary Rookie Impact:

    • Floor: Practice Squad player.
    • Ceiling: Depth player.

Good haul of players in my opinion overall. Again, do not want to spoil anything. More to come! :herewego:

    UPDATE:

Ulysses Gilbert III's roster spot is now that much closer to being secure. Both Colbert and Tomlin are biting the proverbial bullet with the depth here. If he can beat out Tyler, he is in:

I think your assessment is pretty much spot on. I think the cap guru's will have some work cut out as well. Ben's new contract with all the guarantees brings no relief to the cap this year (from what I understand), and some posted they thought it could bring 4 or million in relief. This brings the importance of even lower paid vets and how their salary affects the Cap. Would not be surprised to see some more vets cut, but then also a couple signed to friendly contracts. I cannot see this team going into this season with only Macdonald (injury prone) and Grimble , and a rookie with 45 total college catches as the 3 TE's. This draft really surprised me, yet to is starting to make more sense. Special teams play has been a headache for how many years? It may well be Danny Smith, or it could be lousy sp teams players. The one thing a lot of the 3rd day guys have in common, speed and great tackling ability. So Sp teams played a large part in who they picked.

Excellent point my man! Spot on! :)

Pittsburgh is now $25.6 Million in the red Salary cap wise for the 2019 Season after the release of Jon Bostic. I have not the foggiest on how they navigate through this one. Not going to be an easy offseason but sure will be an interesting one.

Does that include the rookie 'hit' (the money allocated for rookie signings). This is a nite mare really. There is not enough restructuring you can do to get out of that, at least not and expect to have any money in the next 2 years to sign the guys you want.

Nono. The Rookie Wage Scale acts as a failsafe of sorts against incidents like these. There are no longer any rookies that obtain bigger contracts in their first four years that supercede many of the current players on their respective rosters; seldom the league at that.

Dead money accounts for exisiting contracts from players who are either traded or cut but are still on theit contract for their team. This level of Dead Money mainly stems from the Signing Bonus of those players contracts; Antonio Brown's being the highest at ~$22 million. The Rookie payments are allocated by the Rookie Wage Scale. Each Rookie's form of payment is determined by this system.

So let us take a look at a Projection for Devin Bush Jr. from information given to us by Forbes Staff Member Kurt Badenhausen:

    Total:

    18.9 million

    Signing Bonus:

    $11.9 million

What is important here is the signing bonus. That is the money fully guaranteed. That affects the cap. The total amount does not do nearly as much damage.

There is one final bright spot about our cap situation. Given the fact that A.B. has signed a new contract, any form of remaining money he would have gotten from Pittsburgh is rescinded. Why?! He signed a new one with Oakland; voiding the payments he would have received from Pittsburgh in 2020 to 2022.

I doubt Layne will play in the slot, I heard on SNR that he's a outside CB.

I understand most of it. Hopefully a lot of this will clear up after AB's hit this year. Ben's number will be high, but really they had little choice. Even if they would have just let him play it out and tag him the numbers would have been about the same (and very unrealistic and disrespectful). Ahh well, somehow that Steeler accountant works his magic.

Negative or not it's realistic for most NFL teams to have less than half of the picks pan out. A couple years from now you won't remember some of these names.

Most draft classes teams are lucky to get 3-4 guys who can contribute, the Steelers 2017 class the first 3 picks made the Pro Bowl last season.

Ulysses Gilbert might have a shot, his first chance will be special teams. They're looking for that smaller faster ILB, and he fits the bill.

Where did you get that number?
The current NFLPA Top51 cap report has the Steelers $3.2M in the black after BB's extension (which increased his cap hit).

(I tried looking at Spotrac, but their "all players" number for the Steelers is for 95 players, which is a wee bit more than they can take to training camp.)
