I think it all started back when they lowered the age of puberty and the universe sped up. :hmm:

Reading through the replies, I notice that most people found their favorite NFL team at around 8 years old (7-9). I wonder if this is a Steeler phenomenon or a '''magical age" of aligning oneself with favorites. Pat fans don't count because they are all on the bandwagon, New England fans didn't exist before 2000.

Pats were pretty good in the mid 80s and the late 90s. I could imagine someone being a genuine Pats fan, in theory.

I like the theory part but didn't the Bears snuff out any reason to root for them in '86?

I was 12 when the jets beat the colts in Super bowl III and started being a pro football fan at that time. My old brothers were Steeler fans and I followed suit. Bradshaw was my idol, I was a high school QB when they won their first. Boy did I make some bucks off my high school friends who hated the Steelers!

Almost 40 years for me. Mid to late 70's I remember them always winning and being on TV. I was about 7 or 8 years old and it just stuck with me. Went to my first game at Three Rivers November 4th 1990 against Atlanta with my Dad. Slept out in the street in DECEMBER! for playoff tickets during the 90's and early 2000's, FROZE my butt off! Been to about 2 dozen regular season games, 3 AFC Championship games and about a dozen different playoff games over the years.

I've had Directv Sunday ticket since they were still launching satellite into orbit and over an almost 20 year period I probably missed only a handful or two of games. I've indoctrinated the wife and kids into being Steelers fans (they really didn't have a choice) and we've had dozens of Steeler football parties inside and outside over the years.

The Steelers have given me heartache at times but mostly joy in my life and I'll be a fan forever!

Thanks everyone for participating. I noticed one theme that keeps reoccurring throughout this thread...you all are a bunch of old farts on here. From now on, I will make an extra effort to keep you guys hip and cool in a groovy and happening way!

Superbowl XL was the first game I ever watched. Steelers wore white, my soccer team (Fulham) wears white, so I 'rooted' for them to win and stuck with them from that.

Now I assume everyone knows the story of why we wore white that day (if not look it up), so I was THAT close to actually being a Seahawks fan

The Bears are kind of the flip-side to fandom.
I was living in the western suburbs. It took 20 years for the fans to realize that they weren't the '86 Bears anymore.
(I don't mean being nostalgic about the earlier teams, like the Steelers fans do about the '70s teams. I mean that the Bears stunk in the late '90s, and the fans kept expecting them to perform like it was '86.)

They where the 6th seed and wore white in every playoff game as the road team.. Even though they where the home team in the SB they still decided to wear white so to not mess with the mojo

Precisely. If they'd have worn black & yellow as the 'home' team, I'd have been a 12 from that day on

I am AFan of the game in general, not necessarily a Steelers fan.

I grew up in Western NY following the Bills and the AFL. The fist game I went to was '66 between Houston and Buffalo, the starting QBs were George Blanda and Jack Kemp. I still have a ticket stub from OJ Simpsons first game, the Bills played the defending champion NY Jets to open the '69 season. The ticket cost $4.50.

Many old farts, and I'm one too, wax nostalgically for the good old days of real football that they played back then. I'm not one of them. Todays game is faster, more sophisticated and played by better athletes than ever before. And while I think it's over officiated, it's far superior to what I watched growing up.

You grew up watching the old AFL and you think today's game is faster? Certainly different now. With players like OJ, Blanda. Kemp, Alworth, Speedy Duncan, Lamonica...……...there was just as much speed as now, IMO. It just seems better now because of the over officiating.

The difference: in those guys a few guys were fast, today everybody is. And everyone's bigger today. The AFL Jets had an aptly names guy, Sherman Plunkett, he was an OL that weighed 300 lbs, and he was considered a freak of nature and he was about as mobile as a concrete block, Today every OL on every team, even the centers are all over 300 lbs and there mobile too.

True, the players now are bigger and faster but, then, the NFL was 3 yards and a cloud of dust (which I miss) and the AFL was mostly a passing league.

Holy cow .. this is very much me. Living in Northern California at the time, there was no way I was rooting for the Raiders or Niners. I liked the Steelers because of their toughness.

I've been a Steelers fan since the late 70s, so going on 40 years. I grew up about an hour from Cleveland, and my family were all Browns fans, but the friend of mine who really got me into football when I was 7 or 8 years old was a Steelers fan. That got me hooked and I never looked back.

I started watching NFL around 1986. Keen to watch as much as I could (and in those days it was barely shown on British TV) I got a video out of the rental shop called Superstars of the Superbowls. The moment the Steelers section came on - even before I found out they had won the SBs - I was like: that's my team. Whatever team that is, that's my team.

Have been a die-hard fan ever since.

Big fan past 3 years, started following and rooting a little in 2008. Started out with liking a couple players with fantasy football and then next thing I know, I'm all about the black and gold.
