Maybe he couldn't handle AB's ego... Mann somehow was bad to keep AB reeled in.

Don't get me wrong i'm glad Porter is gone. I guess he just couldn't coach up Dud Dupree so they gave him the gate. Funny thing is that Dud will probably still be on this team robbing them of 9 large. Can't make it up folks.

I never understood why you need two linebacker coaches anyway. Talking about miscommunication

No to me fired is having a press conference and saying he did subpar work, that obviously the unit hasn't played anywhere near where they should and Tomlin made the decision to relieve him of his position immediately. What happened here was we need a change but don't have the balls to say "You're Fired, get your ****e and get out" so we aren't renewing your contract and thank you for all your hard work.

My problem with Jerry O is that he watched time and time again as Vince jumped the first open gap he saw, get rolled up in the block and watched the RB cut back or bounce the play outside. The communication on handing off guys in zone coverage was horrible. It was really shocking this season to watch the 2 win Raiders with a rookie LBer play the run better than vets like Williams and Bostic. How hard is it to teach stay back from the LOS watch the RB mirror him and when he commits explode into the gap and destroy him.

I loved Joey as a player. His coaching skills are probably at a lower collegiate level though.

Exactly. If your boss decides you don’t have your job anymore, you were fired. No other way to spin it.

Now me on the other hand, I occasionally have been given the opportunity to expand my resume elsewhere.

Then Porter wouldn't get another job in the NFL, or Tomlin could tell us what kind of OLB coach Porter is .

I'm not so sure. I work for the federal govt (lucky me...right?). My department has about 70 contractors on several different contracts. When contracts expire, some are renewed and some are not. When the contract is not renewed, the contractor is not considered "fired".

In contrast, if the contractor is not performing, abuses time and attendance, commits a security violation, etc...he/she is walked out the door and is considered "fired".

I would agree with a majority of the folks here that Porter was not performing, however, he has not been performing for years yet the Steelers brass allowed him to finish his contract and decided not to renew it. To me, that is not getting "fired"

If Butler stays to me it says they are not serious about making changes. I know they just let Porter go, but Butler being dismissed would have a way bigger effect on the team. I think Tomlin is getting the “things need to change”, or you will be gone from the FO.

I agree on the first part but if he was being given a ultimatum like that, firing a LB coach wouldn't be change enough.

He didn't even have to do anything, just talk and it worked like a charm!

I would still elect to obtain a Defensive Coordinator for that. Have Tomlin prioritize his in game duties as a Head Coach. Having Tomlin doing both a Coordinating position as well as a Head Coaching One could be cataclysmic. For that matter, Tomlin had not really been hands on with the Defense up until Keith Butler was allowing deep passes of 40+ yards careen out of control. Stick with what one is best at.

Todd Bowles, Steve Wilks or Vance Joseph should be considered in my opinion. Before they were coaches, they were good to great Defensive Coordinators. Little to no reason why they cannot recapture that. Dream scenario is still Kris Richard.
