If butler is shown the door, I think the biggest question becomes does Art give Tomlin the autonomy to pick his new D coordinator. This has big implications, as Tomlin Is a 4-3 guy who hired Dunbar, another 4-3 guy. Tomlin inherited Dick and the 3-4 and then Butler. The question becomes will he have the restraint to fix our 3-4, which aside from personnel fit, has been pretty bad. As of late, aside from Watt, Colbert and Tomlin have had a really hard time drafting and signing players to fit the holes in our 3-4 D. My guess is he sticks with the 3-4 and hires accordingly, but it wouldn’t shock me if he’s tempted to look at coaches that have experience in Other schemes.

I have a feeling Tomlin will go hard after Bowles, who when was. D coordinator played 3-4 system and gave 4-3 looks.

Will Tomlin or the Rooney’s look at college coaches? In another forum, some names were thrown out that I thought were interesting.

Jim Leonard - DC Wisconsin - runs a 3-4, closely resembling pro. Has coached Watt and had success at developing 3-4 LBs. Could go after TJ Edwards in draft.

Dave Aranda - DC LSU - we know how good their D has been in recent years. Specializes in DB productivity. Fantastic track record in developing the secondary and has had many cbs drafted in the first round.

Any other outside the box names?

Nice post I am not familiar with college coaches never mind 3/4-4/3 guys. What I do know is Tomlin is that hybrid guy making Bowles a very good match for him. jmo

Do we really believe Rex Ryan would come back for a DC job? Would be interesting...Ravens still run the Ryan playbook.

No one has been knocking on his door for a HC position. He may need to do the DC thing again to raise his stock. If he's willing, I'd jump at the opportunity. He was a heck of a DC.

I'd take Rex Ryan in a heartbeat. I'd also not let Tomlin have any say in the matter whatsoever.

Not only that, I'd tell him to keep his mitts off the defense. Go back to whatever level of input he had when DL was here.

Fire Tomlin and offer Kirby Smart the HC job. Doubt he would consider based on what he is building at UGA. Heck, I'd love to have Kirby as the HC and Jeremy Pruitt as the DC. Our D would definitely be getting some sh!t done, aight.

I like the idea, but I have to wonder if Tomlin and Ryan’s personalities would mesh well. Butlers personality is very reserved. Haley’s personality was big and we know how that turned out.

Works for me. In other words, Tomlin would go back to doing, uhh, let's see, game management only.

Marvin Lewis was just fired. Any bets Tomlin brings his buddy in to be DC?

I would have no problem with that. He is a very good DC and I would even say a good HC but his record in playoffs not so good. Also having a guy from your rival is nice too, but I see him getting one of the HC gigs.

Yeah, was tongue in cheek. Lot of HC positions available, someone will call him.

As far as being a good DC, I have no idea what his track record is there. He’s been a HC forever.
