The danger isn't the previous damage to the nerves so much as the structural integrity of his spine. If they had to fuse bones or add hardware, those can be points of vulnerability.

Doctors clearing someone to return from an injury doesn't mean there isn't an increased risk of further injury. I may be biased due to my own history. I had reconstructive surgery on my foot less than two years ago. Twice, I've been cleared to return to all normal activities. The first time, the fusion of a graft to the bone failed, which required a second surgery and hardware (a plate and screws) to stabilize the foot. Then they cleared me again, only to discover a month later that two of the screws broke.

That's just a foot injury. It sucks, but the stakes aren't nearly as high as a spinal issue.

 

What were they using for screws?

 

I'll report back after the surgery to remove them. I've asked the surgeon to give them to me. Maybe I'll take a picture.

It was a box of old rusty screws.
I wonder if they use stainless or titanium or what. When I use stainless screws, they tend to twist or 'cam out'. I never put any into bone though...

 

It's a good question, though my overall point was that a doctor's clearance doesn't mean Shazier wouldn't be more likely to suffer a second spinal injury than he was before the first one.

 

I agree with your point regarding Shazier, I was just curious about screws breaking in your foot.

The wife has 9 titanium screws in her foot, and in the x-rays they looks just like deck screws.

 

Titanium, stainless steel, chrome alloys, and a variety of polymers. Depends on the specific application.

 

While I love the fact the guy is progressing, I'd actually be happier to see him on the sideline coaching or in a booth than to seeing him on the field.

He was an amazing player, but he'll never be what he was.

I'd also be concerned every time he'd hit someone he'd aggravate the injury making things worse than they are now. Brother needs to hang it up IMO.

 

I had spine stabilization surgery (two level, I think six titanium screws) June 2017. My surgeon said there was no greater risk to the area after surgery. There were some initial nerve complications, but they have subsided. I do daily PT to strengthen muscles in the area and I don't give it much thought anymore. I have been able to stay active since one year after the surgery: surfing, mountain biking, kitesurfing, skiing, snowboarding, etc...

Not sure the specifics of Shazier's situation, but I wish him the best!

I know. I wasn't kidding about asking my surgeon for the screws once they are removed. I'm curious to see them and I'm also wondering how something like that breaks. We did show the X-Ray to a podiatrist in Pittsburgh, a friend of my wife's, who basically said s*** happens and it really wasn't that unusual.

 

Dudes never gonna play again but he should improve his quality of life. One bad hit and he could die if he played. Not sure he would do that to his family

 

I had thought the same thing, til I saw the photo of him lifting weights.. dude is a warrior for sure.

That said, I don't see him regaining the skills he had before. You typically don't go from paralysis back to top-flight pro football player anytime soon, if ever. I'd be ecstatic if he defied those odds though.

 

I won't say that yet. He is determined. He is not lifting weights because he enjoys it. He totally shalieves he is coming back

 

I wasn't referring to his technique when I mentioned luck, however I do think it was unlucky that it happened. I was referring to life in general. So, in my opinion, luck has everything to do with it.

 

Shazier was extraordinary due to his speed. If he can regain his speed, then he should be able to play football again.

 

. He is a Steeler to the core. If he plays one day or not that’s his choice. I just hope he stays with the organization in some way. Scout or something.
