after watching the PITT debacle Saturday night, the only thing that pissed me off more was the condition of Heinz field...TERRIBLE..how could it look so bad this early..and Pitt plays on it again this Saturday, and the damn hurricane coming is gonna push more rain all day Sunday...so..looks like another bad track for James Conner...but ..he's a mudder...loves the mud..his mother was a mudder his father was a mudder ...

Very fitting with the Pirates playing the All-Seinfeld infield of Kevin Kramer and Kevin Newman. Isn't that where the mudder thing came from? Can PNC be re-configured for football?

Sooner or later they will have to admit that artificial turf is the only thing that will hold up to the use that field gets. It would be different if the Steelers had built an offense to run the ball non stop but they haven’t. Their offense would be better suited to a dome.

The turf is always an issue. Because of it's positioning so close to the river it doesn't take much to saturate the field and make draining water away very difficult. I prefer a grass field, but they really should consider a field turf like NE has.

Agree with those who say we need turf at Heinz.... like Ravens and Patriots stadiums.

Yeah, while the Heinz turf usually sucks I can't blame them on this one. Ridiculous amounts of rain recently.

Greatest NFL highlight ever, right ahead of the Immaculate Reception and Harrison's Super Bowl INT.

As of right now the weather channel says very little chance of rain Saturday and Sunday.

I have to disagree. There’s a lot of subsurface drainage technology out there that could be effectively employed. Keep the players on real grass.

I've also noticed the field has gotten worse since 01. It definitely needs to be replaced. I fear that it will lead to a serious injury.

As it stands now, rain chances in Pittsburgh between now and Sunday are minimal. The field should be fine.

I live north of the city, by about 90 minutes, this is the first it's stopped raining since Friday.

Hopefully Hurricane Florence stays away with it's rain until Monday.

That being sad, Heinz field has taken much better of the sod, over the last 10 years, than prior. No easy task with two football teams playing on a natural surface field.

That’s what I am seeing also. Weather is predicting that the hurricane stops in WV/MD/VA area and isn’t up hitting us with rain until late Sunday/early Monday. All week it had said that we were due to get hit by Sunday but that has changed.

To the people that actually want it to rain, why? A lot of fluke turnovers happened last week. A couple due to Ben being dumb but some fluke also.

Ours and KC’s skill positions match up very well in terms of studs everywhere, but given dry conditions and a non torrential downpour the entire game, Ill take our HOF QB over a second year gunslinger you can be baited into mistakes.

Are you saying replaced with real turf or synthetic turf? Keep in mind, they now replace the grass every year.

They usually replace the sod after the WPIAL championship high school games.

By that time Pitt is usually done with home games and just Steelers games remain.

I am in Raleigh area...latest and greatest is this thing has slowed down a lot and should still be hangin with us in NC into Sunday. She is 450 miles across so she cuold still push rain up to the motherland. These storms have a way of changing a lot as they come ashore though...it could slow down more or accelerate or go north or go south. High Pressure system to our north setting up so any turn north or acceleration is unlikely. More likely slower than faster.

Wow. I thought I was the only one that saw that during the Pitt game. First game of the year and the field has a bunch of worn spots. It should look like a golf course this early in the season. That WAS pretty bad. Again National TV and the field looks like crap.

No artificial turf though. They should be able to keep this field up. Again, poor management.

Lastly, I thought that after the Miami mess with the field that the Steelers put in some super duty drainage pumps that allow the field to drain and they can pump the water out so that it will not become a soggy bog. I believe this pumping system is buried under the field like 18 inches or so. The water drains down thru the sand layer under the turf and then it is pumped away.

But there is no excuse for the first game of the year and the field looks like it does at Thanksgiving.

I think many of you are going by some bad info. The field has gotten better since they got rid of the GrassMaster system.

That was what caused the fiasco in that Miami game. They tried to lay sod over the GrassMaster stuff and sew it in....then they had that torrential rain that just killed it.

They've changed the drainage and now they use Kentucky Bluegrass and re-sod multiple times during the year. it has been ranked in the middle of the pack of fields to play on since then.
