If Bell shows up to sign his franchise tag is he then officially on the team or do the Steelers also have to sign to make it official?

Pending passing physical he's in I believe and I'm wondering if there's a piss test coming as well.

Wouldn't that be something if he didn't pass the physical? Then what would happen? Would he then be a free agent? Or would the team have to pull the tag? Could the team essentially hold him hostage by not letting him out but not clearing him? I'm not saying it would happen, but it would be amusing to me.

The franchise tag is legally a contract offer. If he accepts, it will require two signatures. By offering the contract, within NFL/Union agreement, the Steelers will be obligated to sign.

Ok. I was thinking once he signed the Steelers could say never mind we’re going to pull the offer?

I think there IS a drug test when you sign a new contract.

Since no one can negotiate a deal for him this year even if we traded him, a trade will likely never happen.

If he holds out until week 10, or holds back in his performance at all this season to either prove a point, or play it safe, I say tag him again next year just to mess with him. Yeah, its 20 million next year, but he's all about that long term guaranteed money. He'll be fuming.

Then trade him to the worst team in the league.

I’m afraid you are right. The Steelers are stuck. There’s no way he will agree to a trade. Whatever team he goes to, he would have to trust that they would offer a long term deal after the season is over. If he got hurt, they could just wash their hands of him.

Really they have to decide if the risk of him causing turmoil in the locker room is worth the comp pick they would get next year. I’m not sure it is. He’s dumb and would be there stirring up crap. The team would be basically throwing away this year. I’d just pull the tag and be done. Of course he will go to a team we don’t like just for spite because that’s the way he is. But it’s either that or let him destroy the chemistry of the locker room.

The team should have known better than to trust him. They should have moved him long before this. Not much can be done now though.

Trade won’t work from either perspective. No team is throwing away draft picks, not high picks anyway, for a 1 year rental.

A cancer in the locker room for a third round compensatory pick? No thanks. Show this punk the door and move on. All trust is broken his agent has basically said he doesn’t want to play hard. It’s over like V Macdonald playing before the bye week. Ova

I'm sure their is a piss test during the physical. If he fails I believe it is a year suspension. Then the tag is pulled and it's ba bye.

I also wonder if he holds out to week 10, fails the piss test does it effect just this NFL calendar year or would it carry over to next season?

Tag him next year? Hell NO.

I think I read that bell has until sometime on Saturday (tomorrow) to sign before he would lose his 1st game check.

Best case scenario: Bell holds out for 10 games, Steelers save $8.5M and give that money back to the fans and community.

JC proves he's the heir apparent leading to ring #7. Bell gets mop up duty in some meaningless games, a cheap ring and a contract that doesn't make up for the $8.5M he lost this year.

Okay, so Say Bell sits out until week 10 and then signs the tag. If the Steelers want to play mind games and tag him again next year, would that tag still be worth $21.32 million? Or, since Bell would only get paid $5.5 million would the tag then be 144% of that figure and only cost the team $7.95 million?

    CBA, Article 20, Section 2(b):

Any Club that designates a player as a Franchise Player for the third time shall, on the date the third such designation is made, be deemed to have tendered the player a one-year NFL Player Contract for the greater of: (A) the average of the five largest Prior Year Salaries for players at the position (within the categories set forth in Section 7(a) below) with the highest such average; (B) 120% of the average of the five largest Prior Year Salaries for players at the position (within the categories set forth in Section 7(a) below) at which the player participated in the most plays during the prior League Year; or (C) 144% of his Prior Year Salary.

(By way of example, a kicker designated as a Franchise Player for the third time in the 2014 League Year would have a Required Tender equal to the greater of: (i) the average of the five largest 2013 Salaries for quarterbacks; (ii) 120% of the average of the five largest 2013 Salaries for kickers; or (iii) 144% of the player’s own 2013 Salary.)

If the Club designates the player as a Franchise Player for the third time, the designating Club shall be the only Club with which the player may negotiate or sign a Player Contract. In lieu of designating such a player as a Franchise Player for the third time, any Club may designate such player as a Transition Player pursuant to Section 3 below.

You need to discount the $21.32 million by the 10 games he sits out next year.

I absolutely want to see Bell playing this season for us but should he hold out and move on next season I will wish him all bad luck. Hope he goes to a terrible team with a bad O-line. The Steelers are SB contenders this season but I feel without Bell our chances have taken a big hit.

I'd really like to be in a position where losing 800,000 plus a week is an option. It took me 62 years to have that much money to my name.

I read that too. I can't believe how easy it is for these guys to get paid and they do nothing but whine about being mistreated. He can show up Saturday, not practice all week, not play in the game, and still get his game check. That's about as close as you can get to outright robbery. Also, if he shows up in week 10, over halfway through the season, he gets credit for the whole season as it applies to free agency. Yeah, players, keep whining about how you are being taken advantage of. I am more convinced than ever that whatever you side you fall on in the players vs owners debate, it has nothing to do with football and more to do with politics.

Bell is all about the money and nothing with regard to work. I bet he shows up as late as possible tomorrow so he gets his game check for no work.

Isnt 16 times 900K 14.4 million, it seems to me he is being paid closer to 900K per game than he is the 800K number....
