    That doesn’t make sense either.

Bell has a $14 million cap hit right now. Trading him at would result in taking that off the books also. With the reported ~$12 million we already have, trading him would then put us at $26 million under.

Unless they are getting back a couple of starters that have decent cap hits, that doesn’t make much sense.

It has to be an extension for someone.

I'll sponsor the wings and Cuty Beer if someone else will throw in the season tix. But won't you have front row seats on the old pine taking over for Landry? Oh I get it - you want tix for all of your supporters here on TSF MB. :thumbs up:

I disagree about it being an extension

Nobody in the past 2 draft classes are going to get one right now.
The current people whose contracts are going to be up include
    joe Haden (12mil cap hit)
    Tyson Alualu (3.7mil cap hit)
    Ramon Foster (3.6mil cap hit)
    jordan Berry (1.9mil cap hit)
    DHB (1.4mil cap hit)
    LT Walton (under a mil)
    LJ Fort (under a mil)

None of these people are getting an extension along the lines of 12mil.
Foster could get a modest extension raising his cap hit around a mil at most. Alualu could get the same but we're talking 2 guys over 30 that could technically retire if they wanted to.

The only reason I could see them doing this right now is to sign someone on the FA market, which looking at what is currently out there nobody deserves even 5mil let alone 12 mil.
Or they are working on a trade for someone. Pure guess is for an OLB since Watt is sorta healthy and Dupree I still didn't see anything resembling a good pass rusher during the preseason.

Well it has to be a trade guy right so who are the names? I see Thomas has been mentioned but who else is on the trade block? Both OLB and ILB could be positions right???? All this cap space is so unsteeler like makes me really wonder something big in the making.......

Ben can get an extension. That would take up all of that. Haden would take up about half of that probably.

A FA, like you said, wouldn’t even take up 25% of that number.

I said a trade wouldn’t make sense when it comes to Bell. It would make sense if the trade didn’t involve Bell and just draft picks. Involving Bells money in any trade would only work out if multiple salaries were coming back or someone with a cap hit of $20+ million.

So you're telling me that Haden would get an extension to increase this years cap hit to around 24mil total???? no freaking way.
Ben's current cap hit is 23mil. If the Steelers did give him an extension it would have to be in the ridiculous category for it to increase his cap hit this year. With the restructures that he did over the years most likely his cap hit would go down some if they did extend him.

Like I said there isn't anyone on the current roster that would get an extension that would need this much cap space

I read that a few teams called about Dobbs. Could the Steelers have kept him while working a deal this whole time? Not a word of Jones even being interviewed. Just throwing it out there. Crazy has happened

They could be structuring the cap hits to lessen future years and make the current one extremely high. Many teams do this with massive signing bonuses around the league.

Signing Ben and Haden to longer deals while taking on much more cap this year to have better numbers in the next couple years could 100% use up that cap space. Along with getting Jesse James a new deal.

To do that right now doesn't make sense though. Anyone restructured guys have a larger cap hit later in their contract which would cause a higher dead money hit if we ended up cutting them. No way Colbert is trying to give Ben the kind of extension you're talking about when they just invested in Dobbs/Mason as well as still having this year and next.

Reading through the comments at Depot someone mentioned Chandler Jones as a trade possibility. Haven't followed him since NE....any thoughts?

Edit....huge cap number I wouldn't be too sure of that ever happening

Wow bad are Hilton and Burnett injured?
How bad are the ILBs on this team?
How many OLBs do we want?
Is Bell's absence making RB a need?
Is McDonald injured enough to be looking for a TE?

Who's out there? It isn't Donald, Mack or Dez.

Thomas? I don't see much out there or any big trades happening now...

If I had to guess, perhaps Ben's extension. If not him, Bell's?

Unless there is an outside linebacker on the market currently or if the team elects to trade for someone, not entirely sure who it is. Only "big names" I can think of would be the likes of Dante Fowler Jr. or Shane Ray. However, that is about it as both are set to become FA's come 2019.

Idk I just edited my post he's making a boat load and I don't know why they would trade him but theoretically no Bell and Dupree next year makes it at least somewhat feasible

What’s the price though? I don’t think they should give a first for Chandler Jones.

Likely a 2nd and a player or two threes and a player.

Either way though, if it is Chandler Jones, I would not mind.

IMO he would be worth a first round pick. Hell we spent a first on Dupree. We should be picking late 20s unless something really bad happens. It's more the money I'd be worried about but Bells money and the money we would have to spend to keep Dupree offsets that....he had 17 sacks last year...that's more than all our OLB s combined or just about....

Isn't that what NE got so maybe like you said a 2 . I don't know what players they would want but a 2 and a 4 or something along those lines....

I tend to agree with you. If they have the money, go for it.

The only question is, and I know it’s a rumor on the internet so probably not true, but why would the Cardinals trade a guy that just got 17 sacks the year before? Doesn’t make any sense.

They wouldn’t trade for Bell either with Johnson there.
