Freed up over 5 million against the cap. I believe they are around 12 million under now. Really seems like they are preparing to make some sort of move.

Interesting. This is beyond just cap maintenance. I suppose there is a remote chance that they are stockpiling unpaid cap monies this year to push into next, but I think that is highly unlikely. I'd guess a trade is in the works...hopefully an OLB.

we are vastly thin at olb for sure, especially with watts hammy and buds concussion(jk he just sucks) and then you factor in OLA and we have nothing.

I figured they would bring in John Simon from the Colts. They considered that cut to be a difficult one. I believe he can play at DE and OLB. But you don't need 12 mil in free cap space to do that so... no clue honestly.

Or they may be preparing an extension for Ben.....
Or offering Bell an extension ( past the deadline to sign a long term contract in place of the Fran Tag..)

You are right. Bell is not allowed to sign or even talk about a contract with the Steelers, until after the season is completed.

And the only thing that would make sense in terms of it being on this team, is getting Ben under contract for a couple more years. May be getting JJames under contract also.

But the only reason that I could see them needing so much cap for is if they wanted to get Ben on a major cap hit this year to lesson the burden in the years to come. But to do that while restructuring guys and making their cap hits much higher in future years, doesn’t really make much money sense.

 

I'm not sure,but if you are ,it does remain a possibility. Some heads will explode around here that's for sure...

I thought it was said that had they not come to terms by July 16th that he would have to play the season under the tag, and the two sides could not talk about a new deal until after the season would be over and to which point it would be pointless to for Bell to not test Free Agency to see his worth.

 

He can't negotiate a deal now. The deadline was back in July I believe.

 

Maybe working out cap space for a Bell trade?
