Matt Thomas with the 1st Team

Another guy posted this as the predicted roster. Think it's time to five Fort a chance. He's looking pretty good out there. Matt Thomas was showing good coverage abilities last game also.

The hope is we can start covering these athletic tight ends.

 

There were other poster's who talked him up after he signed as a UDFA, including myself .

LJ Fort has had a great camp. I was admiring him at Saint Vincent's when I went, he seemed faster, and even forced a fumble. I think he's been that dirty red at this point. Although Fort and dirty red are good special teamers.

 

I hope they don't cut Fort or Thomas just to keep Matakevich on the roster. It seems Thomas has made the 53, if they go through the trouble to put him on the field with the first team defense and give it a specific name.

 

Far more of an athlete than Lawrence ever was.

 

You may be allowing the way Timmons looked at the end of his career color your perceptions just a bit. You make it sound like Timmons was the undrafted free agent and Thomas was the first-round draft pick.

 

100% certain Timmons was not a 4.4 40 linebacker coming out of college; 41+ inch vert. With 11 ft broad jump to boot.


As I said, Matthew Thomas athletically far exceeds Timmons. Timmons became a first rounder because he had great athleticism to go with great football IQ.


Thomas does not have the football IQ just yet but his athletic abilities are in another weight class.

 

Hope they keep Forte too he's shown much preseason this round.

And they grabbed Timmons because he was a quick agile beast that could move laterally at his best. In fact, he hasn't gotten his just due and proof of that is we have yet to really replace him.

 

It's a minor quibble.Thomas would probably have a slightly better showing in a track meet, but I'm not sure the "by far" part is accurate.

NFL.com has Thomas's 40-yard dash time at 4.58, right around where Timmons was out of college. Timmons was carrying a bit more weight at that time even though his listed height was two inches shorter than Thomas's out of college.

Ultimately, I'm more concerned that the guy plays fast, which is what we've seen so far in preseason.

Regardless, whether it is to be believed or not, I was not simply talking about speed or explosive capabilities. I was referring to the whole athletic package that I see in Thomas in comparison to Timmons.


Timmons has the greater IQ but Thomas has the superior athleticism.

 

Shazier-like speed, but when I saw Matt Thomas chase down & pass Nat Berhe when Berhe had at least a 10 yard start ..very impressive. For a LB to outrun a DB like that, oh God , unacceptable ..Berhe need to be cut immediately. Safe to say the brother is not slow, he's tall ..we may have something special there . I'm hoping dirty red get cut, promote L.J...

 

While Thomas looks like he's making the team, Red is not getting cut. You've got to be out of your mind to think they're going with a free agent pick-up and a UDFA rookie as his back-up and neither one of them knows the defense yet.

Also, in a year when they've dropped a lot of veteran leadership from the ST's, you think they're going to let another key guy go?

 

what good is keeping someone that knows the defense but cant do anything anyways? lol

 

I hope Thomas turns out to be another "diamond in the rough" like Harrison was. This might crack open the window that has shut.

 

I think whether the window has shut or not, we should all enjoy the ride together

 

I agree... but I'm not going to be delusional and ignore facts like some people here do on a regular basis. The D has a long way to go to reach championship caliber, but there's already signs of improvement.

 

Now if they could board up his mouth.

 

Berhe is making it as a STs guy, not as an actual safety. If he has to play defense we are in trouble.
