I think that it’s going to happen that way too. I’m just pointing out that it’s not a fact. A prediction or opinion yes, but not a fact.

Dobbs is starting game 4, he should have a good game playing against players who will be cut after the game is over.....

It occurred to me that Ben played in the Mid-American conference, so that pretty much scuttles the OP argument regarding what defenses Rudolph played against in college.

I actually like all 3 non-starting QB's. I don't hate on Landry like some do; he is what he is and the Steeler coaching staff feel comfortable with him in the same way I do with my favorite old flannel shirt. It's no longer new and perfect and the cuffs are frayed and the wife always tries to pitch it, but I like it because it's comfortable and it keeps me warm when I'm fishing or working in the yard.

The decision on who they keep between Dobbs and Rudolph is not going to be easy. I like both of their upside even though they are still raw, but the thought of one of them having to start a game this year makes me anxious. I can see Dobbs playing well enough against Carolina to make the decision even more difficult. In the end, I think they will probably keep Rudolph and relegate Dobbs to the PS where they will likely lose him. I think we lose him because his athleticism and intelligence are too hard to overlook.

Does anyone see a situation in which they trade or release LJ and keep the kids that have more potential upside? That would be real interesting.

I'd be curious to see Ben's 2004 pre-season games today frankly.

I have no clue how they went back then, I saw them, i just don't remember. I do remember not being stunned they were going to go with Maddox for '04 with the plan being to have ben ready for '05. Fate didn't see it that way and it worked out OK. I'm simply thinking he didn't light it up in preseason either. Mainly because - that's not the goal for preseason. Camp and practice tells the staff if you/can't make a certain throw. You don't lose half your strength simply because it's gameday. Furthermore, i'm not entirely sure Mason had the playbook that open yesterday. I'm thinking the staff's plan (at least in the third) was to get him some action and see what they had with Samuels. That many runs to him isn't on MR. Yeah, there were some check downs, and there were some primary targets to him as well. His recievers were largely Tucker, Griffey, Patterson, and someone else i didn't even know was on the roster. Not exactly a rivetting bunch.

Washington got decent time with the 1's, but Ben never looked at him except one time and he threw it 15 feet over his head and out of bounds. I don't think he had a catch, period. Was it personal? Was it @#$% happens, was it per plan as they want to expose him to working with 1's but don't wanna tip anyone off for the regular season. Just saying, even with Ben out there, they were hardly guns blazing and going after it.

They used a bunch formation single back with a single wr to the right quite a bit during the first few drives making it seem like they were working on a 3 WR, 1 TE and single back base package

i don't know what the coverage is looking like , if guys are open or not, but the ball is not getting pushed down the field. period. i'm watching a lot of other guys that were drafted this year that are making plays and making some good throws. just not seeing it with this guy, and that's ok.. like i said it was worth taking a chance on him on the 3rd round. When you are just handing the ball off over and over or just dumping it off over and over it's concerning at this point. Ben is losing no sleep i can tell you that and Landry isn't either and that's saying something. could be completely wrong, hope i am.

I agree. It's not looking good. Right now he is realistically #4 and should be cut on merit.

I don't know, is he better so far than Dobbs or Landry? Does he deserve to be higher on depth chart?

They will be keeping Mason. Can't tell anything in 5 qrts of play. Steelers had a first round grade on him. They will keep him on potential alone.

If they believe Dobbs can be a good QB, Jones would be the likely cut. His contract and age figuring into the decision as well.

They like Landry a lot. Its a long shot Dobbs makes it.

I agree with that too. I'm thinking they've got to keep Landry, he has a bit more veteran experience, in case Ben must sit out games. And, Mason is an investment so they'll probably keep him too. He looked okay yesterday in moving the team and making decisions, but as the OP said he is not pushing the ball down the field with his arm. Dobbs is better right now imo, on merit. That would be a tough deicion for me, knowing that Mason did not clearly beat out Dobbs, and Dobbs is in rookie contract too.

You don't see anything positive? People try to see what they want to see. Your mind was made up when we drafted him.

How many interceptions did Rudolph throw?

Dobbs is better? He is better at throwing interceptions.

If Rudolph isn't cut out for this league then so what. Dobbs isn't either. Neither is Landry Jones. Gabbert isn't either. Jamarcus Russell isn't. Johnny Manziel isn't. I could go on and on and on. You have to take a chance on guys even though you know that most of them won't work out.

Not sure, but we invested a third round pick on him. He’s not getting cut.

I thought it was a good pick in the 3rd round to be honest. I don't he should be cut, but as of now i see dobbs showing more poise and he's a project QB. Mason through a pick 6 his first in his first NFL action i believe on the first drive. Early prediction yes, but i don't see him developing to be "the guy". I don't wish failure on anyone or make baseless assumptions, but he does not look the part.

Didn’t Dobbs also throw a pick six his first pass of that game?

yea, i'm not saying dobbs is a world beater, i guess i was kind of using him as a measuring stick for Mason's play thus far. Dobbs will never be the guy anywhere he goes, but is at least getting the ball downfield and has shown good awareness in the pocket. I know he's playing for a job which changes things. The Steelers had a 1st round grade on Mason, tons of others have had 1st round grades as well haven't always worked out. I don't really pay attention to the grades as a fan .. i look at what's going on strictly on the field. A 1st round grade QB should be a little further along playing against future practice squad guys and guys that might not even be in the league. Like i said i hope i'm wrong and wish Mason nothing but the best as well as the Steelers

You don't see Mason Rudolph developing because he didn't throw deep passes with a 4th string OL in front of him? And your NFL qualifications are what exactly? How long have you been an NFL scout and for what team?

In other words you're just another guy on the internet who thinks he knows something that no one else knows.

If I was Mason Rudolph and they put me in a meaningless preseason game with a 4th string OL I would get rid of that damn ball as fast as possible. To hell with the deep passes.
