I've been reviewing the game, and not only does patterson have good speed, he has good route running ability. He dropped on ball that wasn't the greatest throw to begin with and has showed decent hands.

If he can consistently keep it up, I think we have another good WR in the mix. Keep an eye out.

I'm really pulling for him to make the roster.

The best 4-5 WRs make it, perod. 3 more games to find out who those players are, but right now, Pat has the edge.

Watch it again. He doesn't have good speed, it's just okay, probably slightly below NFL average speed for a WR and his route running needs a LOT of work. Just because he caught a few balls doesn't mean he has good speed and route running ability.

Watch the chair route he ran to the right side, up-out-and then up the sideline. Each turn he made was rounded and the CB saw it easily and was way ahead of him. If a QB would have thrown it to him it would have been intercepted easily.

I think he probably makes the team though.

Let's not get to far ahead of ourselves. Patterson made a great catch. It looks like he has decent speed, size and hands, but his routes have to get a lot sharper and that takes work. That is where the silly comparisons to Antonio Brown fall apart. Brown is faster, too, but the real difference is that Brown runs such great routes and he seems to be able to create separation from defenders at will.

Didn’t they say he ran a 4.5 40. At 6’2” a 4.5 is moving at a pretty decent speed. If he can play specials and all reports are he loves specials I think he makes the team.

At the expense of Eli Rodgers & Marcus Tucker, Patterson has a good shot...

    I'm calling it right now...

    1. Brown
    2. JuJu
    3. Hunter
    4. Washington
    5. DHB
    6. Patterson

His route running definitely needs work. He was doing well in the beginning of camp but by reports he had fallen off the last few. He had a nice showing in the game but like you said I don't think anyone should be anointing him just yet. I think we keep 5 maybe 6 WRs but only 4-5 will dress. Even if he makes it I'm not sure I see Patterson getting a helmet that often on game day unless he sharpens up his routes. It's gonna come down to how Ben feels about him and if he can trust him in games...

Yeah, his speed is okay but he's not a 4.35 guy. He's not going to be known for that and that's not what's going to make him successful in the NFL.

That's like saying Antonio Brown has speed or Hines Ward had speed. They're not speedy guys. They won with their hands, finding holes in zone coverage, and toughness.

I think the bottom line as to whether he makes the roster or not is dependent on how he can contribute to special teams.

AB has game speed. Hines was an anomaly. Keep in mind, he didn't have an ACL in his left knee due to a childhood accident (bicycle?). No one knew it until he was drafted.

On the deep play he caught, he didn't just run fast. He did a good job of timing and utilizing head and shoulder motion to throw the CB off to the left turning their hips. As soon as the momentum was going the other direction, he turned inside and ran past him. Dobbs had a nice throw to the back of the end zone throwing to a position where Patterson made it to and made a nice catch.

There was also the in route where he got nailed in the back. He did a great job of holding onto the football.

He had a nice out route.

Overall I saw 4 good routes and catches from him. So the one you point out isn't going to be a make or break situation for me. There is a reason both Dobbs and Rudolph was targeting him. He was creating separation and getting open.

So I disagree with your assessment.

I think we're deep enough at WR to keep 6. I have a feeling only 5 make the cut though.

Hines was ruthless for a wide receiver that caught anything coming his way. Kordell would lead him into safeties on a continual basis and the dude would come up smiling with a reception. He wasn't incredibly fast but ran good routes and had hands as glue. Not to mention he was an exceptional run blocker.

He has the body type of AB. Interestingly AB only ran a 4.47 at the combine. Not exactly breakaway numbers, but that goes to show the difference between game speed and running a 40 yard dash.

I'm not comparing Patterson to AB, but I am seeing the potential with Patterson. We have 3 more games to see if he can be consistent. If he is, I don't think that's getting ahead of ourselves.

Hines was one of the most clutch receivers I have ever seen. Even when he would make a mistake he would almost immediately, a play later, make up for it. He would impact plays in so many ways. I'm so happy he had the career he had and he was a Steeler thru and thru.

Who is the punt returner? That is the extra guy as a WR.

Yup. Also YAC blocker for his team mates and special teams player/blocker. I can't think of another NFL rule change that was implemented to keep an offensive player from disrupting the game, except 'the Hines rule'.

Hines would catch over the middle knowing he was about to get popped. He didn’t give a sh*t lol

They will probably only keep 5 WRs.

Quadree Henderson is apparently the return specialist that will relieve Antonio Brown on kickoffs and punt returns. We didn't get to see too much of him in the preseason, which I was surprised of.

I guess he's already got the job then. Most of the kicks to him weren't taken run back at all due to the situation.

I wouldn't take his lack of opportunities as having anything locked up. He's going to have to prove his worth as a WR ,he isn't going to make it as a return specialist. We have too many other holes and talent to have a spot for a specialist....

Tucker was also back as the punt returner. That will determine a lot of who's kept and the number of receivers.
We only have so many spots. I doubt we see 6 WRs kept and a returner. Then there are the game day actives.
