They maybe right but I don't think the team thought Burnett was going to be a star when they signed him. They got rid of some dead safety weight and had to add more than just who they thought would start, but also for depth, after seeing the D suffer so bad from crap at the position. They reacted to a major flaw, and that is done by not only the draft, but in free agency.

Burnett very well could begin the season as the starter with Edmunds starting my midseason. My problem with this article is they seem to presume that the Steelers signed Burnett to be a star starter to begin with; I think he was signed as a piece to get the day "solid" with a vet presence until the young guys get up to speed, and afterwards, for depth. I don't think he is in a position to "disappoint" unless he is an utter failure out of the gate. I think he will do fine at the role they had in mind from the start.

    1. The Pittsburgh Steelers secondary was a disappointment in 2017 at both the cornerback and safety positions, and that's a major problem for a defense that put six defensive backs on the field 24 percent of the time, per Football Outsiders. When a team's base-defense guys aren't doing their jobs and its situational reserves are pressed into service, things can get messy.

So, the Steelers went all out at the safety position in the offseason, signing Morgan Burnett, 29, after releasing Robert Golden and Mike Mitchell and selecting Virginia Tech hybrid defender Terrell Edmunds in the first round. Edmunds is an incredible athlete who can do everything from dime linebacker to deep safety, but Burnett's abilities may be more limited at this point in his career.

The ninth-year veteran was a highly versatile player in his prime but became more of a linebacker-depth, run-stopping safety over the last few seasons with the Green Bay Packers. That's an important skill in Pittsburgh's defense, especially since the team is trying to find the best way to replace hyper-athletic linebacker Ryan Shazier. But if fans are expecting Burnett to perform multiple tasks in a hybrid defense, they may be in for a surprise.

    Burnett > Mitchell

That's all that matters at this point.

I believe you are 100% correct here. Get a guy who is at least average and work in a better young guy when they are ready.

He doesn’t need to be lol.

10 players without Mitch> 11 players with him

This is sad, I thought Mitchell was going to come in and be a Clark 2.0. Not as bad as my Limas prediction, but it is right up there!

To be fair, all indicators pointed to 23 being a new Clark: his combine #'s, his stats with Carolina (4 ints, 4 sacks in 1 season)...we all assumed he would be very solid. He wasn't. He sucked bad.

By the way, MM had only 35 tackles and zero picks and sacks last season. He _really_ sucked more than usual.

    Yep.

You do not draft a player in the first round to sit anymore. They have to contribute; capacity being regardless.

Case in point? Terrell Edmunds is likely that incumbent so that Burnett can assume duties as the dime 'backer. Until then, Terrell will play the dime 'backer role.

Morgan Burnett is a temporary stop gap option. The hope is that Terrell Edmunds gets up to speed quickly so that he can ascend to the Strong Safety spot; moving Burnett subsequently to the dime "backer role.

One question that report did leave out that is going to play a massive factor into this; what will Sean Davis' performance be like when that time comes?

    Time will tell.
