What difference does that make? (Asking honestly.)
I thought his 2018 salary was guaranteed for injury, so he was getting it sooner (bonus) or later, right?

(Edit: Nevermind. Dave at SteelersDepot pointed out: "...the Steelers may have done this restructure so that when Shazier’s contract tolls next season, it will do so at a much lower base salary.")

Soo does this free up cap space for 2018 like the other restructures?

    Did he get an extension?
Trying to figure out how we'll be on the hook next year?

The Steelers have converted $8.26M of LB Ryan Shazier’s 2018 base salary into a signing bonus, per source. Shazier, placed on PUP Wednesday, earns that money now. While there are no cap implications, it’s a great gesture by a first rate organization.

No extension. No change to cap.
Just an adjustment if the Steelers decide to toll his contract next year.

Instead of the amount being the 5th year option ($8.5M), Shazier's salary next year (same as this year) would be less than a million.
(The team now has a reasonable choice to keep him on the PUP list for 2019 instead of cutting him for the salary savings.)

So, who's footing the bill for all his medical treatments. That should be the team, right?
This just simply makes it easier to keep him around next year?

Bonus money ...is different from salary money.. It's like when they restructure contracts .... they use bonus money to supplement for salaries being pushed back to the end of their contracts. So that, it won't be a hit against the salary cap.

That's what I thought as well but not according to everything that is being reported, see my post above.

Bonus money is spread out over the length of the contract, which reduces the cap hit in the initial years.

In this case, they are converting salary-to-bonus in a 1 year contract (the 5th year option), so there is no change in the cap hit this year.

In theory that sounds nice. But it’s relatively low pay and a lot of travel for a guy about to get married.

He's already a millionaire. Depends how he spends it. There are also different levels of the scouting department. Some can pay upwards of 100,000 a year. .

Everyone, While I don't think this impacts the salary cap this year, could it next year? I have heard his salary will carry over till next year. By making this a bonus now, his salary that carries over is now just the lower number. Is that correct?

I don't see how it can carry over. It's a one year contract. Unless he signed an extension I don't see how that's possible.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but al this did was give him most of his money now instead of waiting for it in weekly payments?

You are correct. This year is the end of his contract in all aspects.

Actually , I think, this season and his salary will toll over to next year. In essence this doesn't count. We'll have his rights next year but at the salary that wasn't converted over to signing bonus..... 480k I believe ....

If he recovers and returns to the field it'll be as a Steeler next year.

I looked at multiple sites stating he is a UFA in 2019. Therefore no money. Are you seeing something otherwise?

This year is his 5th year option and they converted that to bonus.

The next year's contract won't toll until after the 6th game.

Article 20, Section 2 of the NFL collective bargaining agreement states: “Any player placed on a physically unable to perform list (PUP) will be paid his full … salary while on such list. His contract will not be tolled for the period he is on PUP, except in the last year of his contract, when the player’s contract will be tolled if he is still physically unable to perform his football services as of the sixth regular season game.”

This ...... Also , since he was placed on reserve PUP his status tolls until 2019 which means he makes no Money this year .... But the Steelers converted all but 480k ( I think ) into a bonus so he'll get his money this year ..... Super classy by our FO..... Next year he probably won't return but at least he's still a Steeler!!!

Help me here. He had a 4 year contract. They exercised the 5th year which is 2018 and turned it all to a bonus. How does any of this affect 2019. Trolls or not?

Martavis Bryant was suspended for an entire year... So that year didn't count and we retained his rights and salary for the next year .... It tolled to the next year....

Same with Shazier.... We exercised his 5th year option making it completely garunteed but then He was hurt... The FO put him on reserve/PUP which ended his entire 2018 season meaning his rights and salary moves to the following year,2019, saving us millions in cap space but the FO converted all but 480k of his salary to bonus meaning he gets it now instead of 2019 and since we have his right next year it'll be at the money he didn't receive.... 480k.....
