I like to see production that will transfer to what we need here in at least 3 or more seasons. I like to combine that with good workout numbers and hear them speak. Show me all the numbers and some brains and you have something no matter the division or conference they played in. Then I like players that played in a similar type of defense or offense as we run.

I think we need to not overlook guys who are currently OLBs in college. Timmons was an OLB in a 4/3 who we moved inside. Look at the guys who have the athleticism to move inside in our D not just guys who are ILBs at the moment.

There have been plenty of players who weren't fulltime starters in college who excelled in the NFL FYI .

Read that Steelers are doing their due diligence on LVE and then in a comment section a guy who was claiming was a big Boise fan noted that LVE played 8 man football in HS and that he is very raw and will need some time. In his opinion for us he would take Evans over LVE......8 man ball and only a Sophomore to boot....doesn't sound like he would be able to step right in and help....trading back is starting to look more and more positive.....but for us highly unlikely.

I believe you may have misunderstood.

When I stated that seldom do athletes stick out on tape, I was referring to their athletic traits and not other factors.

In Vander Esch's position, he needs the combine as he does have the skillset as I see it.

Wow that is a heck of a jump will be interested to see him run. I had read he was putting on more weight, but to go to 250 is like 30+ his playing weight.

Mayock thinks Leighton is a great fit for us. Says if he runs a 4.6 at the Combine, he'll go late round.

I think Vanderesch vs Evans will be very interesting tomorrow.

On tape, in terms of athleticism, it doesn't even look close. It' Evans by a mile.

    Will be exciting to watch.

I haven't seen a lot on SVE but what I have I liked. He is not the big hitter that scares me he don't push the pile back. He does drop in coverage nice and can rush the passer, my only thing right now is how far off Leonard is he? Also there are a lot of guys in the later rounds that I am liking with the similar skills. Cabinda, Scales, Burks, Worley, Smith and McCray are all guys I feel so far offers same skill set but without having to draft high. Cameron Smith and Chris Worley may be gems later on, jmo.

Oh my. Someone had quite the day. :applaud:

Leighton Vander Esch. He improved his draft stock today for certain. These combine numbers sure do look promising.

    • 40 YARD DASH: 4.65 SEC
    • BENCH PRESS: 20 REPS
    • VERTICAL JUMP: 39.5 INCH
    • BROAD JUMP: 124.0 INCH
    • 3 CONE DRILL: 6.88 SEC
    • 20 YARD SHUTTLE: 4.15 SEC
    • 60 YARD SHUTTLE: 11.57 SEC

    Regarding RaShaan Evans, why he elected not to run the 40 was quite intriguing for certain. Regarding the rest of his numbers;

    • VERTICAL JUMP: 30.0 INCH
    • BROAD JUMP: 116.0 INCH
    • 3 CONE DRILL: 6.95 SEC
    • 20 YARD SHUTTLE: 4.36 SEC

Now I know, numbers are not end all, be all. However, in the case of these two, they most certainly are for us. Keep in mind that, on the NFL.coms Draft Profile's for both, Esch has 20 more lbs than Evans. Add the fact that Esch is likely to get pushed down due to his experience and non Power Five bias and we just may be looking at our future Inside Linebacker.

I say just may because the Defensive Backs are on tomorrow and quite a number of them will likely be within Pittsburgh's interest.

I still like Evans' tape more that LVE, but gotta give the big guy credit. Fantastic workout numbers. I'l have to watch a few more film breakdowns on him.

And I guess Evans didn' do the 40 because the Bama pro day is on Wednesday.

I think he is a 4.6 guy, maybe 4.55 so won' be all that much different than LVE, and theres' obviously a big size difference there too.

Oh without question Evans tape is more impressive than Vander Esch's. You know what a Day One Starter vs a Day One Impact Player look like and both Esch and Evans fit these molds to the tee.

As you said though, should Evans hit the 4.5 mark of any type, he is likely going in the top 15 as I believe Tremaine Edmunds is top five although his position drills did look a bit shaky.

I would like to see LVE at about 240 he would surely be even more explosive....Evans has the tape but LVE may have a bigger upside...

Trimming down for him will not be an issue at all I would imagine for him.

He just might be one of those rare exceptions of athlete that can increase their speed while also increasing their strength.

LVE looked smooth in the drills at 256 at the combine.

So got to see Leighton test today, hes on my early wish list. Real smooth and fluid movements.

He scored better then Shazier in the 3 cone (6.88 vs 6.91), 20 yard shuttle (4.15 vs 4.21) and only .7 seconds off Shaz 40 (4.65 vs 4.58).

Fast enough to cover TE's and goes sideline to sideline easy.

He's definitely in play 1st pick.

Not to mention that Vander Esch is 19 lbs heavier than Shazier was when Shazier performed at the combine. Granted, Shazier has him beat in the Vertical Jump but not by much also; 42 inch. vs 39.5. Broad Jump though Shazier has gotten him beat by six inches; 130 to 124 respectively.

As me and you have stated though; for a 250 lbs.+ linebacker, he performed extremely well. In fact, outside his 40 time, he has a top five pick in Tremaine Edmunds beat in both the broad jump and bench press collectively; 119 inch. and 19 reps to the aforementioned 124 inch. and 20 reps.

I think you're right. I got my info from the above link but 4.58 isn't freakishly fast for a LB. I remember Shaz being the fastest in a race accept for DHB on the team.

For some reason I'm having trouble finding anything else. Usually you google a players name followed by 40 time and it pops right up.
